What makes Dragonball “good”

Dragonball Z was, I'm almost certain, the first cartoon I ever watched that didn't wrap things up in a neat little package after each episode. I loved how each episode connected to the next. That's why I got into it in the first place, I wanted to see what happened next. And I liked the animation too, probably because I'd never seen anime before (accept Pokemon, but Z looked so different to Pokemon, and I didn't even know that Pokemon was an anime anyway). Goku was my favorite because I thought he was such a badass. And the music...Funimation had their music made for people like me. It really drew me in.

The reason I like Dragon Ball so much is because of how different it is. When I first started reading it I had never read about characters like Master Roshi, Goku, and just about everyone in the damn thing. It's just so funny and the story really just draws you into it. Not to mention the art and style of the show is nothing short of incredible. Akira Toriyama designs some of the coolest looking characters. I would have never noticed games like Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger if it weren't for his style of drawing. Anyways back when I didn't know the whole story by heart I'd watch Toonami everyday on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. For me everything from the story telling, action, humor, and characters were all very unique and I still haven't seen anything like it (maybe One Piece) since. It's one of the only anime that I can watch over and over again or just pick up a random volume off my bookshelf and even pop in a game every once in a while and still just enjoy it like I was experiencing it for the first time. I've been into Dragon Ball since 1997 or so and It's just one of those things I'll probably never grow tired of.
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

I know this good cartoon, there's blood in it, people put their middle fingers up, the main character is strong enough to blow up the planet, and the characters actually grow up and get older as it goes along.
It's a few points people may be convinced by, the more realistic reasons would be because of the storyline and character development, and the characters are drawn from cool angles, and episides end on cliff hangers most of the time, but people probably wouldn't be as interested if that's all you said.

What about everything before that? Videl's introduced 24 years after Dragon Ball begins, it must suck if you don't like anything prior. :(Saiyavenger2941 wrote:Nuff said.
Great picture, though.

Heh, in all seriousness, there's a lot of good about the series. Sure, Gohan and Videl are my fave things about it, but it takes a lot more than two characters to hook me like this series did.
I think the biggest thing that hooked me has already been mentioned. The fact that we get to see these characters evolve over time.

I came into it watching the Saban-edited dub, mostly on Cartoon Network. I got into it because of the martial arts action. It also had a sense of continuity similar to the X-Men cartoon I had watched on FOX a few years before and I really liked that. Killing most of the cast in the first season probably helped cement it for me as well because, since getting the Dragonballs on Namek would be such a hard task, death in that show could mean staying dead for good. While that kind of permenant concequence doesn't really exist that often in Dragonball in the long run, at the time it was amazing.
Sure, there was the "growing back," the "parachutes," the "cargo robot," the "warning shot," and the "Next Dimension," and I could tell from the beginning that it was all censorship. However, it didn't bother me at the time because I knew it was put there for really young kids and, as a teenager, I personally knew what was really going on when Nappa caused that "trans-dimensional shift" right after landing on Earth.
The two big things that really kept me around after the hype started to wear off for me during the third season (the cast changing didn't go over well with me) was Ocean cast dub of the first three movies and discovering the manga. While I didn't know that the music in those movies was the Japanese music, I thought it to be completely superior to the TV show. I also liked the pace and the ability to stay on-topic instead of giving one-liners and throwing out "next dimensions" and stuff for the little ones. Those movies and the manga were superior to the American version of the show in every way.
In the end, though, what kept me a Dragonball fan is how Dragonball in-general kept me interested in martial arts training (Ninja Turtles is what got me into it). The "hetchara" and "yaburekabure" kind of attitude in terms of friendship and overcoming challenges obviously doesn't hurt, either.
