Viz isn't going to pull anything tricky, are they?

They didn't even translate the title of his book right. It's Icha Icha Paradise.. Icha as in "coming"... >_>

Anyway.. for now we're buying the English versions of Dragon Ball just so we can read through the series easily. I can understand a good deal of Japanese, but my boyfriend only knows simple phrases.. So it's much easier to read the manga together in English. Someday I'd like to buy the whole series in Japanese though. I'll probably get the kanzenban versions, too. :D

Well long as its left in the GN release I don't mind much...as is the case with that tanuki's nut sack (which is NASTY).

Although Herc stayed in the GN release...they did still acknowledge him as Mr.Satan...or that he was known as Mr.Satan. I don't see the purpose of creating two seperate names for the world champ though, its confusing! Viz outta just release seperate versions of all their magazine SJ titles.

I can see it now -

DragonBall and DragonBall Z: Perfect Popo and Satan Edition
Joy to all! Popo's lips are back and Satan is Satan! This is how DB/Z should be!

One Piece: Special Zoro Reversal Edition
Zoro's name has been restored to its former glory, and, we've included all the pirate lingo and cussing too!

Shaman King: Special Gigantic Hairy Testicle Edition
All the fat hairy Tanuki nuts your tastebuds can handle! Those big...sweaty...bags

Yu Yu Hakusho: Special Funi-Style Cussing Edition
You want cussing? All the four letter words you can stomach! No more "What the flippin ding-dong!"

Hikaru no Go: Special Teenager with Cigeratte Edition
We even went back to restore that punks cigeratte! Joy to the world!

Yu-Gi-Oh: Special Original Japanese Card Names Edition
Now you too can enjoy the artistic integrity of the original card names!

Naruto: Special Original Technique Name Edition
We don't know why you care so much for them, but for you hardc0re fans here they are! Sexy no Jutsu!

And to top it off, these SPECIAL editions will cost an additional 2 dollars!

I don't mind the Viz translations since it's close enough to find and read mangas in english.
But yeah, the names and all annoy me off sometimes. Kinnikuman Nisei/ Ultimate Muscle used names only from the dub. Kinnikuman - King Muscle, Terry the Kid - Terry Kanyon, Kinniku Buster - Butt Buster .... in DBZ, Mr. Satan is now H.... . Monster cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! use their dubbed names ... you get the picture!
Fry: Wow. The jungles on Mars look like the jungles on Earth.
Prof. Farnsworth: Jungles? On Earth? (laughs)

heh, I compared my Spanish to my American manga, and Black is indeed edited to have colored in lips in the American version! Will have scans when I get it back up and working.

Uh... no.
Jeffrey's Japanese<->English Dictionary Definition: "icha-icha"

To "come" (that is, to ejaculate) can be referred to as "deru" (literally, "to leave" or "to go out"), or "iku" ("to go"), or "shasei suru" ("to ejaculate").

So there. :P

They were slightly off-color in the anime, but not where it would get anyone pissed off, though.

Why do most translators translate it as "Come-Come Paradise" then?

And what was that last comment about "hentai"?

Like previously stated in other topics, FUNi did make them talk eloquently, and Black as a character was in the end higher than Red, so that shouldn't inspire any hateful feelings!

EDIT:

By the way, Julian did put up the link and Icha-Icha is "To flirt; make out" so Viz was right. Do you really think they'd have a reference to ejaculation in a manga targeted mainly to boys and young teens?

But there must be some reason that scan groups translate it to "Come-Come", right?

Yup, same reason some fansubs have tons of explicit swearing.

But what is the reason for the groups all mistranslating it? I hope they all didn't copy one group...

Naruto fansubbers don't tend to use swearing unless it's needed, with all the "Kuso!" and "Chikusho!" flying around.

You're right, Naruto fansubbers are pretty good about that... But still, I trust Julian more when it comes to the Japanese language.

Still, is there a way it could've been misinterpreted, Julian?

I suppose it could've taken on some new slang meaning, but I don't really know. I'm stickin' with the dictionary until I see otherwise (and I must reiterate that Viz isn't technically wrong, regardless).

I remember there was some stuff about Ino's "Shintenshin no Jutsu" being called "Valentine Technique" or something like that in Viz's version, while all the scan-ppl and fansubbers call it "Mind Body Transfer Technique".

Although what I found was, Shintenshin is a Japanese game known as "Change of Heart". w0rd  Whats even funnier though is googling it and seeing all the other forums where fanboys are ranting about it, without knowing that.

Viz should do what they did with Kenshin, add a glossary-thingy on the back of all their manga with translation notes and crap like that. It prevents fanboyism outrage. Its an highly underated feature! It beats having an extra page of ads or "OMG j00 reading the wrong way!"
