I somehow think they are censoring the show because they want to sell it easily to other countries.

Altering a show for provit? Totally against that.

Altering a show because its a kid show? Debatable but I really dont think there was any real need to do it.

Personally, coming from my Yuugiou days (well, still Yuugiou days), I deplore censorship. Well ...

Let me rephrase that. Obviously there are just certain things kids shouldn't see. I think the stuff they are censoring though is very debateable. I certainly understand sometimes the need behind it, but it's sad when they do it and often times, I don't think it's necessary. They have had they had the originals available and uncensored for so long. I would rather see Kai uncensored.

Here's a good question: Was there an anime that got censored on TV but uncensored on VHS or DVD in Japan? And how common is it to do?

Personally, I don't care if it's a child's penis, a gaping hole in the chest, or a cigarette. This is utterly unnecessary censorship considering these episodes have been accessible, acceptable, and otherwise unaltered for so long. We're finding the works we grew up with being changed, protecting people from something they surely don't need any protection from.

But this is my opinion, so what are yours?
I don't like censorship, but "these episodes have been accessible" for a long time. If I get into some funk over not seeing Gohan's penis hang out while he's smoking a cigarette through the hole in his chest as he blows away old people and dogs with his extremely realistic sub-machine gun, I'll just read the manga like I do most of the time, anyway.

My feelings exactly. I just don't care. If it truly and honestly tampers with a scene, I might have something to say about it, but for the most part, these things have been minor and don't hurt or help the story at all. I just don't care enough to see a point in censoring something, but I also don't care enough to get upset when it's there. Apathy works, boys and girls.

First of all, I want the manga Kendamu's reading.

Second of all, it doesn't matter to me if the original is available. I want to enjoy Kai. I can't enjoy Kai, as a new product, when it censors the old material it re-uses.

More than that, all the video games are being re-branded "Kai". What happens when all of my video games start getting Kai's censorship? I don't like that idea at all.

What's wrong with nudity?

One video game, that we know of. And you're overexaggerating. TV and video games are two different mediums. TV stations won't air certain shit without restrictions, but no one realy cares what you buy for your own personal use, such as a video game.

My personal opinion is that I didn't mind that they edited out Goku's penis, but Goku being bruised instead of having a gaping hole in his chest was kind of ridiculous of you ask me.

But then again, I'm 22 and clearly not the audience they're targeting.

I totally get where you're coming from, but as I see it, Kai is far from being the primary way I enjoy Dragonball-related things. The first thing that comes to mind when I want some Dragonball blaring through my TV is Super DBZ. If Kai somehow manages to make Super DBZ no longer exist due to a time paradox, then I might get mad.

Raditz and Goku haven't been getting holes in each other in the games for years. Also, I've never seen a 3D rendering of Gohan's wang... especially on the PS2. If a game branded "Kai" suddenly had no nudity and no bloody holes just remember that it isn't so sudden of a thing. It happened long before Kai.

Well, the last episode of the anime "School Days" was censored when talking about sound effects and blood being colored black... and the DVD was uncensored with red blood and added gruesome sound effects.

It happens. I know the (horrendously bad) anime Toloveru got the covered-up nudity from the TV version replaced with... slightly less covered-up nudity on the DVD release.

It's not my primary way either, but that's not the point, really. If there is an otherwise awesome new Dragonball product that is a fun diversion for me, then I wouldn't be happy if they superimposed pink ponies all over the thing.

Yes, the originals exist. This isn't a discussion of censorship as it pertains to making the originals disappear. It's a discussion of censorship and how it affects Kai, and I think it's fairly legitimate to say "Censorship in Kai is making Kai less enjoyable to me", even if the original is still around.

Now that I think about it, I actually wouldn't know. The last console game I played was the first "Budokai" game, which was beautifully uncensored. Since then I've mostly been thriving on portable titles. I suppose it doesn't affect me as much as I was thinking.
Nothing, really. But I'm not gonna miss it.
It bothers me for a lot of reasons, though. Whenever I see it and know it's there, I know the thought process behind it. It stinks of Saban, too. By pushing them out after-the-fact, they're saying these things are "wrong". Etc etc, I could go on. But essentially, I think you can see what it boils down to.

Your DVD question. I can't really think of any good examples at the moment, but I browse /a/, an anime text board, quite frequently, and there's always someone going "is there a subbed DVD rip with the uncensored footage anywhere?" or "Make sure you watch the DVD rips, the broadcast version had edits and such."

Hmm, interesting...!!

I wonder if Shikamaru smokes in the DVD version ((stupid Viz manga  ))... although that would be a "hellova" re-animating job if they really did go back and edit the lighter out and add the cigarattes.

I don't really mind of care about it. If standards have changed, then standards have changed, and you can't blame Toei for having to hold to them. Personally, I do find the lack of a post-Makankosappo hole in Goku's torso to be a bit silly... Anyone would know you're gonna come out of that with more than a burnt/bruised mark. But things like covering up little Gohan's dongus with his tail are unimportant, and even clever.

If there's eventual DVDs that are uncensored, then that's fine and good. Otherwise, I personally don't think it's worth throwing a fuss over, and that Kai's good points FAAAR outweigh these little annoyances.

Question: Who's responsible for the censoring? Toei or Japanese law?

It's probably Toei trying to get rid of any content which may conceivably cause problems or get them into trouble.
