I like this theory. It also adds to Goku's naivety, which we know is a big personal trait of his.
A reason for this to be plausible is that many times, even the good guys have overestimated/underestimated their powers.
Except for Vegeta. He always overestimates his power. I think it's a fault of him schooling himself in sensing ki in Namek, without the help of anyone.
Given, it makes him make mistakes regarding his abilities to defeat enemies over and over again whilst the others chime in once more with the "Vegeta isn't going to make it..." tune.
