I was initially disappointed at first that the Blu Ray wasn't in widescreen like the dvd and the broadcast. I admit I didn't do any research on it and just preordered without thinking and realizing the Blu Ray was meant to be full screen.

The fight scenes look freakin' GORGEOUS in HD. I used to be impressed with the Dragon Box, but the Kai Blu Rays blow them away in the fight scene department. I also have to admit the quality is so good at times, it looks like the scans from the daizenshuus are coming to life.

However, I don't think I'm going to invest in getting all of the Kai BD's unless I become a millionaire. I'll probably wait for FUNi to release them.

Kai looks better in wide screen or full screen?

Hey, this is probley the last time I'm posting screen shots from the DVD. The reason for this update is because I was watching the intro in slow motion and there are some really awesome shots that you've probley never noticed. Also the digital animation looks really good on DVD, imagine what it looks like on Blu-ray  . Here is some eye candy...

Not in any particular order, sorry...

Yea, it's mostly the Goku VS Vegeta fight cause I love those scenes. Also how can you look at these shots and not want some kind of newly animated OVA re-telling the Saiyan saga or something?

Speaking of in HD, are the digital HD broadcasts of DBK in Japan broadcasted in 720p or 1080p? I've been trying to figure out what the norm in Japan is currently, but haven't had much luck getting a definitive answer. Are the 720p raws being distributed online the same resolution the show is being aired at, or are the popular raw files being limited in resolution by the regular output limit of 720p by most image capture devices?

Anyway, thanks for the great dissection and screenshots, Tanooki!!

So, even the opening was originally created in a 4:3 format?

I wish I could see a screenshot of the blu rays
You can see some screen shots here: http://blurayblog.blog79.fc2.com/blog-entry-340.html
Ok, I'm confused. Why does the Blu Ray look blurry compared to the DVD? Am I looking at this wrong?

I'd call the opening/endings another theatrical film situation, considerin' they took widescreen broadcast into consideration.

I'm a little confused by it myself. Maybe those pics are just compromised.

Ok, so I guess that wasn't my last update. I was watching the DVD and was wondering how much stuff was actually cut off\gained in the 4:3 version. Here was the out come... sorry for the horrible Blu-ray shots but we aren't comparing quality here...

Hmm, you can see the grass and Goku's legs...

You can see the ground in this shot...

I really thought this scene would suffer the most but it looks fine to me. Also I never noticed the Dragon was in the background...
Image

It almost seems you gain more with the 4:3 version. What are your thoughts? Anyone want me to compare any particular scene?

Yeah, WastedWisher mentioned that they redrew all scenes in a 4:3 aspect so it's natural you gain more on the Blu-ray

BTW in that last shot you can immediately tell they drew that scene specifically so they could crop it to 16:9

Ok, I thought they re-centered the scenes when making it widescreen, I figured the 4:3 version would then be off because of that. Good to know. :D

I don't know if someone mentioned it but I just confirmed by myself that the BD is region free :)

Umm, I'm pretty sure they are region encoded, it's just that Japan uses the same BD region as America.

Yep, there've been comercials in 4:3 that feature OP footage in 4:3 (link).

It's not region free, but as SSJ Rambo said, Japan has the same region as all America

Well, call me a charlatan, but I'm assuming they didn't region code the release (which actually isn't too uncommon these days) ;p

Yeah, guess you're right, I never realized that, it's been years since I had a problem with a region code DVD

It's great that Kai is getting a proper 4:3 release! I was worried about all that lost footage, but I suppose it's not an issue now. :)

Seriously, though--fuck that censorship bullshit.
