The Saiyans' Ability to Breathe in Space

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Even if Goku could breathe in space, he'd starve to death before reaching another livable planet.
I've always looked at it like this. I always thought that sayians had the ability to survive for small periods of time in space. If Goku were to survive Namek's explosion without of ship there would be little hope of him making it to another planet and he would die from starvation or lack of oxygen(which ever comes first). In Bardock's case if he had survived Freeza he could simply fly back to planet Vegeta and restore his breathe(like coming up for air in a swimming pool). That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

Due to Frieza having knowledge of this fact, he took advantage of it by shooting a huge energy blast all the way down to Planet Namek's core, so even if Goku somehow managed to defeat Frieza and/or survive the planet's explosion, he would die in space due to a lack of oxygen. Now, to get to the point, I've noticed an inconsistency that contradicts this entirely. Towards the end of Bardock: The Father of Goku, Bardock was able to breathe in space when he was blasting through all of those soldiers in order to challenge Frieza. So, my question is, if Bardock was able to breathe in space, why is it that Goku is unable to?
It's an inconsistency. Freeza stated that Son Goku would not be able to breath space, yet Bardock is shown both in the anime and the manga in space.

You could make the argument that, in the manga, Bardock was still in Planet Vegeta's atmosphere or orbit or whatever.

'Nuff said.

Just because Freeza says that, doesn't mean it's true.

He doesn't say anything in the manga, so he could be holding his breath.

If Goku doesn't need to breath, he sure does it a lot for no reason.

Frieza breathes just as much as Goku.

I was also thinking about the times Goku couldn't hold his breath, or had trouble breathing at high altitudes. He also mentions how the air's thinner in the Room of Spirit and Time, too.

Do you know exactly how long it took for Planet Namek to explode? No. For all we know, it could've been 5 minutes.

But this topic has been talked about multiple times. We don't even know how long 5 minutes is in Dragon Ball. With Toriyama, he can do whatever the fuck he likes in his work, no matter how bizarre it may be.

What exactly is there to breathe in space?

Nothing. That's why it's called 'space'.

Exactly. So why are we discussing who can or can't "breathe" in space? Freeza can't even breathe in space!
