How long did the Saiyans live peacefully with the Tuffles?

It also opens up the possibility that there are still Saiyans elsewhere in the universe on their original homeworld. Of course I never took this idea seriously because as Rocketman said it adds an unecessary layer of backstory. Then again it could be an interesting plot device for fan fics and/or any future incarnations of Dragonball if done right. I wonder if this is also a plot point from Akira Toriyama himself or another writer of the Daizenshuu. Too bad Mr. Toriyama is not available for comments.
