Ultimately, the manga is the best medium. It's quick, to the point, carries Toriyama's original plot and keeps his characters in place.
But the animation is awesome.
Sure it has pleeeeeeeeeenty of faults, but it also has plenty of good points as well. I'm not embarassed to say I was exposed to the series through the animation and love both mediums quite a bit. DBZ was certainly one of the last great serial Japanese animations. Most 'Japanese' animations aren't even Japanese anymore -_-
