Actually, and I'll probably get hell for this, but here goes...
*inhales*
I like the filler. Yes, I like it. Some of it doesn't make much sense, no, but I think it adds to the overall storyline. Take the Arlia thing, for example. IMO, it built up the threat level of Vegeta and Nappa. In the manga, it's just mentioned that they are more powerful than Raditz, but nothing else is really specified; whereas in the anime, we see Vegeta easily nuke a planet, and realize that Earth is knee-deep in shit now.
Yeah, some of it is stupid {Like Goku's little side-trip}, and some of it is inane {like Yamcha, Tenshinhan, and Chaozu beating up on the Ginyu Force}, but a lot of it, IMO, is pretty enjoyable and works quite well {Arlia and the trip into Buu's innards}.

As for your example: Toriyama was using (though probably completely coincidentally since he never thought ahead) Hemingway's iceberg principal. If you knew how strong Vegeta and Nappa were oodles of months before they arrived then there's no suspense since you know everybody's training. Whereas in the manga you were given the impression that their training may not be enough since they were depending on Goku's return so damned much. As a result, the ass-kicking received was more shocking. The surprise you felt in the Arlia ep was felt when it occurred in the manga, only more so since it happened to ppl that mattered in the story.

I liked both of those, actually. The learning-to-drive episode added a much needed respite from the action {and, imo, I felt it built Piccolo up a bit more as a character, as opposed to a completely solemn warrior}, and I thought that the Bardock storyline, especially the movie, was very well done.Dayspring wrote:Goku+Piccolo learn to drive. I know; but we never really got a good grasp of Vegeta's powers in the anime. I mean, it would have been quite possible for Vegeta and Nappa to have both been like only twice Raditz' strength, and have gotten their asses handed to them. With the anime, we get a decent glimpse of Vegeta's power without revealing too much, and I think it just kind of made them a bigger threat. After all, all we knew was that they were stronger than Radtiz.As for your example: Toriyama was using (though probably completely coincidentally since he never thought ahead) Hemingway's iceberg principal. But yeah, that's just my opinion, and I'm sure it's the opposite for the majority of fans. While some of the stuff, like the Ginyu Force getting their asses kicked and Princess Snake, can be annoying; not all of it is useless, and some of it is pretty entertaining.

Well, the anime TV series does. But they're still making new movies to continue, and the manga is not done yet. Dear god, the manga is already longer than Ranma 1/2 (which was 38 volumes!). Please make it stop. ;-; Inuyasha has such a neat idea, but it just drags on like nothing else. T_____TMattias wrote:Inuyasha has an ending?!
Okay back on topic. *^^*;
Yeah, and Toriyama did the designs for him and his crew. He even named them, apparently. But he did the designs for all the movie/special characters. So I guess Bardock is a bit better than most filler, considering things like um, HebiHime/Snake Princess.Gouki wrote:Bardock is a little different to most filler though, as Toriyama was actually included in the manga after the special had aired, didn't he?
I forget though. Was Bardock just mentioned in the manga after that special about him, or did we get to see him? o.o I mean, I know there was no special chapter for him, but maybe he showed his face? ^^;
