Great to hear that FUNi is putting accuracy before pleasing fans of a silly meme. Thought Sabat's delivery was a little weak. But I'll live =D

The previews are wonderful. Hearing Schemmel, with his new line delivery, saying, "Hey! It's me, Goku!", and delivering the Japanese-style, two-lined titles, is really awesome.
Didn't they do that a long time ago with the next episode previews on Cartoon Network? That's always been kind of rad.

(by the way if anyone happens to find an archive of those let me know)
Yes, way back in season 3, a few random previews had Schemmel with a "Hi, this is Goku!", and then he would do the preview by himself (with no other characters), but they never announced the episode title in the dub back then.

BTW, so far no mention of the Son family name. They use King Yemma. They use King Kai. They said "Other World". *rolls eyes*

Schemmel has already stated he doesn't remember using the Son name. Also, really? King Yemma? :/. I guess I can't complain, but still
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
What, you want him to be yelling it like in Ocean? It's no weaker than the Japanese version and there's no reason for Vegeta to even BE that shouty about it.

Can someone please explain to me exactly how these are incorrect? Because they seem like correct translations as far as I know. It's like saying you'd want them to say "kaizoku-o" in One Piece rather than King of the Pirates.

I guess because it makes the honorific part of his name. It's no different than giving Muten Roshi the name Master Roshi.

But the o is there to justify his status and greatness. It'd be... well, dumb to just leave it as Kaio for an English audience. It doesn't do much explaining. Plus, it can be translated, so why not?

But Kai isn't his "name." Kai means "world" in this case. A proper English name would be "King of the Worlds" or "World King."

Honestly, I'd leave it as Kaiou whatever due to the translation being rather long an awkward, but I'd explain what it means.

I agree with you. If we can have Makankosappo and not have to directly translate it or have any explanation, we can have Kaiou.

I mean shit, we already have Kami as a name for Earth's God. -_-

Man, I don't know shit about Japanese. I'm just guessing based on what I've learned from the guys around here that some of the vowels, from just the straight up romanizations, are a take-it-or-leave-it kind of deal. So Kaio to Kai shouldn't be a big deal. Kaio-sama to King Kai should be an accurate translation, except that "King Kai" is his name, rather than Kai the King. Or Lord of Worlds, or what-have-you. Just like "Muten Roshi" means, like, Immortal Master or something, "Master Roshi" is his name in the English dub. That's not an acceptable translation. So by that logic, "King Kai" isn't either.

I really don't care either way. I really want Hujio to come in here and correct the hell out of me right now.

Here's a nice dub line from episode 4, when Goku stands before King Yemma.

Y: "Hmm...Goku, huh? I'm looking at his file, and it's certainly impressive. So let me get this straight...even though this friend of yours is a shoe-in to get into Heaven, he still wants to risk Snake Way just to meet with King Kai for training?"

K: "Yes sir."

G: "Hey, so this is the place everybody comes when they die, isn't it?"

K: "That's right."

G: "Aliens too?"

K: "Yes. Every living being, human or not, comes here to be judged, and learn where they will spend their afterlife."

G (raising his voice inappropriately): "Yo, did a big guy named Raditz show up here a little bit before us?"

K: "Goku, you do not address King Yemma with a 'yo'!!"

Y: "Hmm...yeah, I remember him. Says here he was your older brother. Now he's on his way to Hell. ...Go figure."

That was damn good. Then later, when Kami quietly tells Goku that King Kai is stronger than King Yemma...

Y: "HEY. What was that, Kami of the Earth??"

K: "What!? Uhh..."

Y: "You shouldn't talk that way about someone who can send you to HELLLL."

K: "Aaahhh...you heard that! You must have the Devil's own ears, sir. The Devil himself! How appropriate! *laughs nervously*"

Well, all that makes sense.

Oh well, I grew up with the dub terms so they don't bother me. I don't really mind.

I think you meant shoe-in to get into Heaven.

But you're right, that conversation seemed MUCH better than its previous incarnation.

"Kami of the Earth" was a nice touch.

Saiyaman beat me to it. I suck.

Yeah, to be concerned about 100% faithfulness in a FUNimation production of Dragon Ball is an exercise in futility. I don't believe anybody is going to be surprised or upset that a lot of these inappropriate translations/adaptations are being withheld. We've known about a few of them for a while.

I also grew up with the dub so they don't bother me either.

So someone here is eventually going to do a Z to Kai comparison right?
