Re: Single most inappropriate dub line?
I know that this forum is based around the original version, but do we have to make threads for the sole purpose of mocking the dub? I am not a dub fan, but there are people on this forum who are. I can guarantee if I made a thread called "most ear-busting Nozawa scream", a lot of people would be unhappy. I apologize if this post sounds like I'm moderating, but this is just something I wanted to get off my chest.

Re: Single most inappropriate dub line?
Piccolo is neck in neck with the following two lines in DBZ.
"Whoa!! What an awful, awesome power! Even his breath is a weapon!"
"Alright, you're on...You can stay until we beat Freeza. After that, I'm gonna charge you rent, you got that?!"
The reason I feel these lines were inappropriate, is because it is obvious that the writers were trying to inject comedy into an area where it wasn't needed. Even without knowing Piccolo, the situation did not call for levity. I can almost forgive the breath statement in that IIRC the oozaru can shoot blasts from their mouth, but I feel it was more for comedic effect moreso than a statement of fact. The second line was just a lame attempt at outright comedy, that just doesn't work for someone like Piccolo at that point and time.
On the other hand, I have to admit the much much later "I left them in my other pants" line was absolutely hilarious. But I think at that time ole' Pic was more of a secondary character where even in the original version he became a source for comedy during that arc.

I don't think this post was meant to mock, so much as to point out the early attempts at trying to make DBZ more comedic, hip, more American, etc. with the inclusion of unnecesary phrases or jokes (to get the cheap "pop") from it's "target" audience. For this reason, it's more of a conscious effort on the writers part to do this vs mistakes made due to lack of knowledge of the characters they were writing for.Piccolo Daimoah wrote:I know that this forum is based around the original version, but do we have to make threads for the sole purpose of mocking the dub? Re: Single most inappropriate dub line?
Actually, we did have a topic like that a while ago, discussing Nozawa's voice and how some people (especially fans used to Goku's manly voice from the dub) don't like it.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:I can guarantee if I made a thread called "most ear-busting Nozawa scream", a lot of people would be unhappy. So I think this thread is just fine.

Haha oh gosh I remember this scene. I even think it's epic for the fact that's it's so extremely bad.NUDEoctopus wrote:In GT during the Super 17 fight, Super 17 says "I admire your ability to keep fighting" or something like that (Its not really important), and Vegeta says back something like "AND I ADMIRE YOUR ABILITY TO DIE!" hahaha its so bad.

Re: Single most inappropriate dub line?
Reading this thread made me remember why I love those Z-goonies in the first place.
Choose:
Krillin: That plans sounds half-baked to me.
Piccolo: "NO...it's fully-baked. " <-- ruin the moment.
Goku: Sorry guys, this is the only place I could think to bring him.
King Kai: "Well, you could have called first." <-- ruin the drama.

"Sir Issec Newten would never have lived to tell about it if one of those had hit him". Something like that.
Re: Single most inappropriate dub line?
This post reminds me of Piccolo's... dramatic... ... stuff... he does. Such as:Ahiru77 wrote:Reading this thread made me remember why I love those Z-goonies in the first place.

"Wow, that Android's toast!"
"Yeah. Burnt toast."
I don't suppose it counts, but that reminds me also of something from the same era. When Goku's taking the senzu mid fight with #19, a friend and I were watching and seemed to hear "Thank god for corn!". I mean, sure, it's obviously Kor-rin, but still... XD
[edit] Forgot... I agree with Kaboom's "Pop goes the weasel!".

Agreed with Zephyr. I also prefer the dubs and still think this thread is funny.

Re: Single most inappropriate dub line?
Krillin, witnessing Freeza's 3rd transformation: "Y'know, it's times like this I say to myself: Why couldn't I have been a shoes salesman?" *insert lame "wah-wah-wah" cue*
Even waaay back in 1999, where I was so happy just to seeing new episodes and didn't care what the dub sounded like, that line still bugs the crap out of me.

Bahaha I watched that episode like...last night or the night before.Son Geeko wrote:Piccolo: THIS IS AMAZING! I FEEL INCREDIIIBBBLLLEEE! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! I CAN WIN! I CAN WIN! I FEEL GREAT! ...then I rewound it, put on subtitles, and clicked the audio to Japanese instead.
Late last night and the night before
Tommyknockers, Tommyknockers,
knocking at the door.
I want to go out, don't know if I can,
'cause I'm so afraid
of the Tommyknocker man.

My name is Zep, as in Hindle. If you call me Keamy instead, it's Kay-mee, not Kee-mee, there is a difference. And dammit Serp, my name is not spelled "Kreamy".

What? I think it's been pretty well discussed that he's being sarcastic. Plus what homoerotic undertones are you referring to?Savage68 wrote:Frieza: "Whatever turns you on, big guy."

@Rory
That's not an undertone, that's just a freeze frame that happens to look like something inappropriate. You'll see that a lot in Disney and really a lot of the monuments around the world.

This image has been discussed to death on other boards, I'm merely posting for S&G's.

Chi Chi: Well sometimes on a date, the boy will try to get the girl to do the most pleasurable thing.
Will sayk, was surprised by only lines people didn't like, as when I saw the title I thought they meant something that sounded a little naughty. And I didn't see the ep where the line I quoted was from on tv, but if it was, I would've been shocked as that didn't sound right.
