Tribute to The Golden Ages of Dragonball Z
Re: Tribute to The Golden Ages of Dragonball Z
Though there are a number of emotional scenes, I think the only one that had me at the verge of tears was the end of GT [will I get lynched for saying this?]
As for the music... I don't get it, did the US release had an OST??
The version I watched used the same background music since the very beginning, so I think at some point it became pretty useless in adding to the emotional value in any particular scene....

That golden age of DBZ was when the entire Cell Games was grainy and Episode 268 was missing.penguintruth wrote:The Golden Age of DBZ was before Funimation got its mits on it.

While I lean towards the japanese version more, I must say for me, the golden age was during the Ocean Dub period of the Saiyan Conflict and Namek Sagas, even with all the several re-runs, it was still exciting to watch. The script was lousy but the fantastic voice talent and Shuki Levy's score made up for it.

Care to explain why? Or are you just going to keep putting as little substance in to your posts as possible?Bardo117 wrote:Umm, no.

Wouldn't today be the golden age? I grew up with it as a kid and the old dub has some nostalgia. But, now when we have and accurate and respectable dub with Dragon Ball Kai how can we call that monster we had in the past the golden age?
It was more like the dark ages.

Wouldn't the Golden Age be when it was at it's most popular? Which certainly wasn't pre-Season 3.

The Cell saga was awesome on Toonami, "See the saga that changed it all!"...So many memorable quotes...I can't even count them all.

Re: Tribute to The Golden Ages of Dragonball Z
To me the golden age was when I first watched it as a kid, years ago. I first watched it in Portuguese and if I recall correctly the soundtrack was the Japanese version. Frankly, I don't like Faulconer's music at all. Being a musician and audio engineer myself, there is a certain brilliance to the original Japanese soundtrack which Faulconer's just can't compete with. The instrumentation on the original is quite good and very well composed, not to mention sonically well produced too. Having watched both the Japanese version and the Funimation dub (with both soundtracks), I have to say what really portrays the emotion on this show is the soundtrack. Even in Kai, with the redone vocal performances, what really brings out the emotion is the soundtrack (which in my opinion is inferior to the original but is mostly better than Faulconer's).
I would definetely say however that the Golden Age of DragonBall Z was when Cartoon Network aired the Goku vs Frieza fight.

But, yeah. If I were to go about this in a nostalgiac view, I'd have to say the "golden age," was when Toonami aired the Gohan vs. Cell battle. Great battle there, even with the, in my opinion, terrible Funi dub voices.

Not really considering both of the original dubs were bad dubs.BluezaBladeNZ wrote:While I lean towards the japanese version more, I must say for me, the golden age was during the Ocean Dub period of the Saiyan Conflict and Namek Sagas, even with all the several re-runs, it was still exciting to watch. FUNimation's yes, but performance wise for Ocean Dub, no. Compared to the dub for Kai, they are bad.Garlic wrote:Not really considering both of the original dubs were bad dubs.

Whether you in particular "like(d)" any of their dubs or not has absolutely no relevance to when its peak popularity was, so it's not worth even discussing.

Re: Tribute to The Golden Ages of Dragonball Z
Not all Ocean dub performances are good, you know. Prime examples are Dale Wilson as Cell, Pauline Newstone as Freeza, Scott McNeil as Jeice, David Kaye as Recoome... There are just as many miscasts as FUNimation's original dubs. Not to mention Kirby Morrow as Goku, ughhhhhh.BluezaBladeNZ wrote:FUNimation's yes, but performance wise for Ocean Dub, no. When was DBZ on CN's peak popularity? It literally got even more popular each season.
