What if Funimation had adapted names into English?

You are correct. The first attempt was by Harmony Gold (of Robotech fame) in the late 1980s. All they did was have a test run in Texas, and most of the character's names were changed (Goku was Zero, Kuririn was Bongo, Puar was Squeakers, and Karin was Whiskers the Wonder Cat, etc.). It wasn't that popular, so it never got continued. Probably for the better.
"Perfect" is the enemy of the good. True for Cell and true for real life.
