Anyways, to post a shorter answer: I always found the Spanish dub to be great for the dramatic scenes, but not as funny as I had remembered the show when I first saw it in Japanese.

For some reason, I really got a kick out of the English (Canadian/American voices). The Canadian choice for King Kai was fantastic in my opinion. It was later copied and used when FUNI took over.
The simple reason is this, I find myself laughing much more when I watch the English dub. I don't know why. Goku, Krillin, Piccolo, Vegeta, just crack me up in English more than in Japanese. The good thing is that the voices are still great when the show needs to be serious. So all in all, it makes the viewing experience for me much more enjoyable.

I find Krillin and Goku hilarious in Japanese too, don't get me wrong. However, I don't find myself laughing out loud nearly half as much.

Oh jeez, I grew up all over. The Spanish dub is pretty near a masterpiece. The translations were nearly perfect too. One of the great things about hispanic voice actors is how serious they take the material that is presented to them. I realized that English dubs of any show tend to make characters sound more "wacky"/"Out of this world". If you listen to Vegeta/Goku/Krillin in the Spanish dub, they sound like normal people who you could meet any day of your life.

I agree, but then again the characters are wacky and out of this world. The Japanese voices to me are the best, but they're a bit too serious. At least Funimation made then seem supernatural, in which they are, but the Funimation voices can be great at making them sound serious as well. Proof. Then again DB is a GAG manga/anime and you have flying aliens and lasers, so seriousness is kinda a moot point.

I agree 100%. Right there in that scene, you have Krillin say something stupid like: "Great! Cell is chickening out!". I found that hilarious. To most purists, that's sacriligious...and I would understand them under most circumstances. (***I can't stand the dub in Movie 9. Replacing Gohan's last pieces of dialogue with :"I'm my father's son" and "There's one word that comes to mind: Kahemahe...." basically made that film unwatchable for me.

Oddly enough, I don't have the same feeling with the English dub. I find that the key moments are handled well. But what I love about the dub is how funny it can be almost when you least expect it. I don't really care if Vegeta says : "It can't end like this" instead of "This is it"
(when Cell fires the Kamehameha). However, scenes like this one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qumRDtd1hik .... make all the difference to me. Just makes the characters even more charming to me.

I mean, the DB purists are trying to make Goku and co sound human, which they ain't. They're simian-aliens which have super hero strength and reflexes. Like I hate when 'Japanese fans' get butthurt when an American says Masako sounds to womanlike and gay, but then they call Goku a generic, cheesy Superhero. Goku IS A SUPERHERO. He Has all these powers, he fights to protect Earth and only fights when he needs to.

I think you missed a good portion of the series.

Goku is selfish, careless, and puts others in unnecessary danger.

I'm getting a little sick of your arguments. If you want to play the "I hate purists" card, fine. Go ahead. Stop parading your apathy around so much yet simultaneously claiming to want to leave this entire community and always coming back to antagonize and speak rudely to anyone who dares respond to your call-outs, though. It's hypocritical, it's obnoxious, and I'm sick of reading it myself and having others complain about it.

Only in the Boo arc is he like that. He did a 180 in personality and shit and became someone who he isn't. In other arcs, when Goku did things like that he repented and even in the Japanese version of GT when fighting the One Star Dragon he even says that all his reasons were good. The Boo arc Goku is the worst Goku ever and that is quite a good argument for the Sean Schemmel/Ian Corlett fanboys. But the English Funi and Ocean(Ian Corlett) Goku are fitting and people just have to realise Goku is a superhero.

You seem to forget some things, or the dub has covered a lot of Goku's actual personality. Goku was like that EVERYWHERE.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I'll admit in the Freeza arc, Goku wanted to fight Freeza, for the sole goal of beating him, but that was because he was an untrained SSJ and rage was everywhere. Hence the 'pure heart and awakened by rage' part of Goku's speech. Goku couldn't control himself.

You seem to just want to talk Z. OK:

- convinces Kuririn, who's about to take him out for good, to spare Vegeta just so he can come back later and fight him

- teleports everyone off Namek just so he can go all-out against Freeza

- agrees they should fight a bunch of androids that kill everyone in the future instead of destroying/stopping them now in their own time

- sends his underprepared and petrified son out against Cell, which was his plan the entire time

- doesn't take out Buu just so the kids can learn to do it, completely overestimating their maturity and capacity

There's also his response to Bulma after Vegeta shoots down her plan to stop Gero before he finishes the androids: "But...I want to fight too."

Guys, I have no idea how we got from a) "Praising the humour in the English dub" to b) Criticizing Goku's moral integrity.

PS- I always laughed how Goku's most noble decision (declining to come back to life) was made just because he knew he'd find much more excitement fighting in the after life. :D

PS2- Back to my original point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ep_UYspiAM
*Playing this scene with the Kikuchi score just works for me...and just to reiterate, the English dub is technically the 4th version of the show that I saw. It's still my favourite.

I wouldn't really call it criticizing. Personally, I find Goku more interesting as someone who enjoys a good fight and can be a little selfish about it.
