Hey, if they want to explain something like that, then they should just go with the Manga Entertainment technique of blaming the fans. :P

I've been meaning to ask this for a while now, but wasn't there a rumour floating around way back when Kai had only started (or was about to start) that the entire series would only have about 100 episodes. Everybody seemed to have dismissed it since they couldn't imagine fitting all 4 sagas into only that many episodes. Seems kind of weird that it turned out to be true but only because the Buu Saga got cut out.

The 100 episode rumor was based on a tentative number. It was an estimation. And we did see that the series was renewed arc by arc. It was possible Kai would have only been as long as the Freeza saga. It turned out to be true, but not because that was the plan from the beginning.

At the prerelease event of the first episode held for the media, a publicist of Toei said Kai would be broadcast until 'the end of the original manga', so I'm sure Toei themselves were thinking about producing more than 100 episodes from the beginning. I guess Toei bought the time slot with contracts renewed annually, but they could not continue paying for that because they incurred the displeasure of Bandai Namco, the most important sponsor, for Dragon Ball's decreasing merchandise sales, and decided to change the programme.
