Saying "chikushō!" like "Damn!" or "Shit!" is not quite rude, but calling someone chikushō can be as offensive as saying fuck you.Shoryuken wrote:If I am not much mistaken then chikushō (畜生), literally meaning "beast" or "livestock", was originally a term in Buddhism referring to people getting reincarnated as various animals due to having bad karma, being part of the Rikudōrinne (六道輪廻 Six Paths of Samsara).
Overrated use of the words "damn", "hell" and "bastard".

I honestly think that the whole "shiiit!" line from Greg Aryes was just a blooper they decided to leave in because of it's hilarious delivery. If you think about it, It's never revisited again after that one time, and even the infamous german line that some youtube user edited to make Cell say "Oh Shit!" ended up as "Oh No!" on the uncut release, despite speculation FUNi would go with "oh shit!" for it.
Besides that point, I noticed that FUNimation seems to uses these "curse" words in odd places sometimes. Sure they added them in when it wasn't present in the original, but I've also noticed that there are also moments when the original dialogue features a kuso/chikushō and was ignored completely in the FUNi dub. It seems to me that FUNi is more concerned with a properly-flowing english adaptation rather than 100% accuracy. Honestly, I'm never really bothered too much by the use of the words, but I do agree it's hard to ignore them when it comes to english Dragon Ball as opposed to other anime it just slips by naturally.

Nobody getting tossed into a mountain in a fight is going to say "darn".
I don't think they need to use the f word, but "damn" should be fine.

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Right, I think Dubku cussin' a swear doesn't sound quite right because we've spent the better half of a decade hearing these voice actors scream "Golly gosh, dang it to heck n' double darn!" so it kind of has this laughably jarring "Where is that DAMN fourth chaos emerald!?" effect when Dubku snaps and calls Freeza a bastard. The cursing itself seems pretty measured and appropriate to me though.penguintruth wrote:Nobody getting tossed into a mountain in a fight is going to say "darn".

Damn, Bastard, and hell just lack the overall severity that a "fuck" has.Akumaito Beam wrote:Right, I think Dubku cussin' a swear doesn't sound quite right because we've spent the better half of a decade hearing these voice actors scream "Golly gosh, dang it to heck n' double darn!" so it kind of has this laughably jarring "Where is that DAMN fourth chaos emerald!?" effect when Dubku snaps and calls Freeza a bastard. Also, the word has no place on the show anyways.

I agree! Did you misinterpret my post or were you just adding on in agreement?
Re: Overrated use of the words "damn", "hell" and "bastard".
The swearing for me doesn't register as much since I'm used to that in the dubs I've seen over the years. I remember back when I was a kid watching Yu Yu Hakusho on Adult Swim thinking it was pretty badass to hear them curse since I wasn't used to that with the shows I watched. The one thing I would have a problem with it though is if fans try to justify that the show's for adults by pointing to the swearing as evidence.

I don't think "cunt" is a word they should use, especially, when, at least in my experience, people view that as worse than "fuck". The other words you listed seem pretty fine, though.DBZAOTA482 wrote:They should use "damn", "hell", "bastard", "cunt", "piss", and "shit".
