Re: Perhaps they've finally noticed the audio issue in GT
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I've got good news. Fortunately, the rerun on BS Fuji has switched to stereo from episode 5. Thanks to the channel's high bit-rates, this must be the best-sounding source of GT ever broadcast.

This is how Dragon Box GT should have been, really.

That's a very odd situation. Considering that Toei destroyed the original masters for DB and DBZ, why would they keep the masters for GT (with the pristine audio)?
PS: That clip reminded me of how angry I am that Tokunaga's music never got a complete CD release. Some of his stuff is so damn good! Maybe if he had composed Kai instead of Yamamoto, we could have had great music without the threat of a Music Scandal.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

That's because Toei started using digital videotapes (probably D-2) from GT. They had been delivering the very film reels to tv stations until the end of Z.TheBlackPaladin wrote:That's a very odd situation. Thanks, Kei! I have been looking for a GT recap everywhere on Youtube. The GT recap is by far my favorite part in the entrie DB series. I would have loved to download the recap music onto my phone so I could listen to it anytime I want.

From the sound of it, that would be the case in terms of the audio, but the Dragon Box would still be superior as far as the video is concerned if Japanese stations are similar to North American stations with station ID logos on screen for either a portion or the entirety of the show, not to mention any programming announcements which may show up during the broadcast.Zestanor wrote:Yeah, so if you have a DVR in Japan, you can have something greater than the Dragon Box.
Don't some Japanese stations also include an on screen clock, or have they discontinued that practice? I can remember a lot of anime screenshots, particularly from the late 90s, which had the time superimposed in an upper corner.

This is great news! Just as others have said maybe Funimation might release this with the awesome audio for their Dragon-box GT (Doubtful but possible) I remember seeing Kei's video he made about the audio comparison (I believe it was trunks vs freeza?) actually Kei if you wouldn't mind can you post a link of the video you made? I'd love to re-watch it again.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

The station logo is on the pillarbox, and there's no clock on DBGT.OutlawTorn wrote:From the sound of it, that would be the case in terms of the audio, but the Dragon Box would still be superior as far as the video is concerned if Japanese stations are similar to North American stations with station ID logos on screen for either a portion or the entirety of the show, not to mention any programming announcements which may show up during the broadcast.Zestanor wrote:Yeah, so if you have a DVR in Japan, you can have something greater than the Dragon Box.

That would be incredible. Maybe Toei can use that as well later down the road if they re-release it on Blu-ray someday?samuraix123 wrote:maybe Funimation might release this with the awesome audio for their Dragon-box GT (Doubtful but possible)

That's quite a good set up, as hi-def stations here have a weird practice of not only overlaying the station logo onto the actual footage of a 4:3 image but relative to the "edge" as it would be on a full 16:9 image. So, if the logo was usually an inch from the edge of the screen, it would be an inch from the edge of the pillarbox of a 4:3 image.Puto wrote:The station logo is on the pillarbox, and there's no clock on DBGT.OutlawTorn wrote:From the sound of it, that would be the case in terms of the audio, but the Dragon Box would still be superior as far as the video is concerned if Japanese stations are similar to North American stations with station ID logos on screen for either a portion or the entirety of the show, not to mention any programming announcements which may show up during the broadcast.Zestanor wrote:Yeah, so if you have a DVR in Japan, you can have something greater than the Dragon Box.

I'm not too bothered by the station logo, it's when they decide to place a message for something, say a marathon or a relate game on the website, on the screen while the show is playing which is mildly annoying.
On the flip side, however, despite the quality of the audio on the Dragon Boxes, at least they didn't do what Rhino did on their DVD release of Transformers; add intrusive and distracting sound effects and then claim they were there all along. Or Shout! Factory's release of ReBoot, which they swear sounds great but to those of us who are intimately familiar with the show (I could tell, just by the way the theme sounded on the menus that something was off), there's no way to ignore the warbling caused by the poor PAL to NTSC conversion of the masters they received. It's just saddening because the DVDs definitely look great, but they are almost unwatchable due to the sound issues. I almost envy the people who couldn't pick up on it.
