Re: S. Kikuchi in DBGT
Since I know of Tokunaga's amazing work for GT now, I would not want anyone else to redo it. The score is perfect. A lot of diversity and change of pace that perfectly capture all scenes of GT.

Ah, the Alpha and the Omega. As all life was created from Chaos...so shall it be DESTROYED!!!
The wails of machines | Singing cold harmony | Shifting air upward | Entranced by the breeze | Light pours like blood | Into a cosmic sea | Of stars crystallized | In a frozen symphony

I'm the complete opposite.InfernalVegito wrote:Since I know of Tokunaga's amazing work for GT now, I would not want anyone else to redo it. The score is perfect. A lot of diversity and change of pace that perfectly capture all scenes of GT.
Tokunaga's score has got to be the worst score I've heard for a Dragon Ball product with a notably shockingly abysmal placement of tracks that makes it completely unwatchable at times.
Even if they recycled Kikuchi tracks from Z into GT, it would definitely be a step above Tokunaga in GT.

Can you give any examples? I'm not saying it's a bad opinion. I'm genuinely curious. I and most people who hear it love it, or at least think it's acceptable.

Here one can see again how extremely polarizing something so trivial like a score for a series can be. That's cool, though.Gonstead wrote:I'm the complete opposite.InfernalVegito wrote:Since I know of Tokunaga's amazing work for GT now, I would not want anyone else to redo it. The score is perfect. I love Kikuchi's work for DB and Z but the way GT is now, is already perfect for me :)

I don't have any footage on hand but I'll see what I can remember.Pokewhiz7 wrote:Can you give any examples? I'm not saying it's a bad opinion. I'm genuinely curious. I and most people who hear it love it, or at least think it's acceptable.
- Dan Dan Kokoro playing while Goku transforms into the golden Oozaru
- Happy-go-lucky music that tends to play pretty much in almost any battle scene. Bebi vs Oozaru sticks to mind
- The music used where Piccolo was dieing on Earth has this really generic "royalty" sound to it.
- Speaking of generic, the whole score sounds just really generic to me and just doesn't work for me.
Again, I don't have any footage on hand so these are all I can really remember at the moment but when I get the chance I'll be sure to post some video evidence.

Re: S. Kikuchi in DBGT
I know that around the same time GT came out, Shunsuke Kikuchi provided the music for Shin Tenchi Muyo (Tenchi in Tokyo). Back in the old Toonami days, I always found it ironic that when DBZ was broadcasted with replacement music, Tenchi in Tokyo was often the very next show they played that actually had Kikuchi's music.
But in the case of GT, It's certainly interesting to speculate why he didn't return for it. I'm sure it was a number of factors that were involved for his non-participaton; one I tend to lean more towards is Toei executives pushing GT into a more modern, J-Popish style, seeing as all of the OP's and ED's were not specifically made for the series as was the 1st 2. It's certainly a shame for me, but what can you do... (thinks of youtube videos of GT adding Kukichi
)
For me, I would have loved to have heard an OST rendition of Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku from Kikuchi in the jazzy, upbeat way only he can pull off

Re: S. Kikuchi in DBGT
Ah, see, while I can think of some off moments like that (though I disagree on some of those), I always think of the perfectly placed tracks, like the mysterious tune that plays as the Evil Dragons first fly away from the Dragon Balls, or the bittersweet one that accompanies both the main characters jumping around the hills on planet Galvo and Goku riding away in Shen-Long as he flies over Tenshinhan and Yamcha. The series is littered with moments that have a perfect nostalgic quality to them, and I give that completely to Tokunaga's score. I also love the short burst of violin music that accompanies dramatic moments.Gonstead wrote:I don't have any footage on hand but I'll see what I can remember.

I think Kikuchi fits Dragon Ball and Z very well, but Tokunaga's score is perfect for the nostalgic, pastel-colored space opera that is GT.
(Your complaints about it being generic, overly up-beat and poorly placed definitely echo my thoughts on Yamamoto's Kai score though.)

Re: S. Kikuchi in DBGT
The GT score mirrors GT in general really well in my opinion. It reeks of "Eeeeh, yeeeaaaah I get what you were goin' for...a-alright." It seems really cliched and boring and what you'd expect. Paint by numbers. Not bad but nothing I'd ever be able to hum if you asked me to.

Exactly this. It's refreshing that it's a little more up-beat than Kikuchi's score.Cipher wrote: I think Kikuchi fits Dragon Ball and Z very well, but Tokunaga's score is perfect for the nostalgic, pastel-colored space opera that is GT.
