Summer 1999, pretty much immediately after my first interview with Bruce Faulconer. I went and rented a couple VHS tapes from the video store. I think it was DB's first few episodes, Tree of Might, and the Dead Zone.

Anyone who got into it in late 1999 and after didn't have to suffer seeing Goku fight Jeice and Burter and then Raditz again...

It was 2000, I feel like I want to say I started watching on and off some time in May, but didn't watch regularly til late summer. I found it on Toonami while flipping channels looking for something to watch because the other channels I watched at the time were airing reruns or stuff that I didn't watch.
On hiatus.

Spring 2010. 8) I kind of hated it when it actually aired. Not that I actually sat down and watched a whole episode... But in 2010 I bought in.

Better then not becoming a fan at all. I got into DBZ around 2001 and I feel like I've been a DBZ fan much longer. I think the late 90's and early 00's (2000 - 2002) where the best time to become a DBZ fan in the US in my opinion.

1999 for me. I first started watching regularly around the middle of the Freeza arc when it aired on Toonami. The episode that got me hooked was the one where Vegeta found out that Gohan and Kuririn snuck off with the dragonballs.

It must have been October or November 1998. I seem to recall it being the episode where Vegeta was killing the Namekian village. I say this because I'm pretty sure I went to the other room to watch Power Rangers in Space and remembered seeing Zhane get his powers rejuvenated by holding his morpher up to lightning...

I became a fan in 1998 (I was in the fourth grade, so that would make me nine). I saw the episode with Yamcha, Kulilin, Tenshinhan, and Chiaotzu training for the arrival of the Saiyans. I did not like it however, but I did give it a chance, and it did grow on me.

My first experience with the show was actually in 1995 with the first episode of Dragon Ball, but the show was weird, and it was on too early for me to normally be up, I think. Don't know why I was up early that one particular day. Hmm... Memories are tricky...

I think it was the Summer of '08. I started off with the FUNimation VHS singles.

It was pretty much thanks to AB Groupe. As kids we never take notice of what's wrong with it, but once we grow things start to change.

South Park's Stan episode "You're Getting Old" explains it nicely.

Canadian Fan

Spring 1996 when YTV brought us the first 13 episodes of Dragon Ball. I luckily caught the very first episode, if that never happened I don't think I would be into it this day. Luckily 2 years later Teletoon brought us DBZ and once again I caught it on its first episode, and its all been history since. I was lucky to catch both series on there first episode.

In October 2000. I was 10. I didn't have cable until the next year, when the Buu era was on Toonami. Until then, though, I was reading random uncensored Viz manga which was sold at Meijer (I'm just now remembering this--very strange in retrospect) which were like 99 cents. But went my parents got cable... man, that was amazing. DBZ every day!

Sometime between 1996 & 1998 I believe. I don't remember exactly, since as long as I remember me being alive, I was watching Dragon Ball.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

 Same as my youngest brother. I would sing Romantic Age as a lullaby for him when he was a newborn. He has known Dragon Ball since before he could talk.

Most fans that I've seen became fans around the 90's. I wonder if there is any DB fans in the US that became a DB fan in the 80's?

1994, which would make me 4 years old at the time. Pretty much became a fan with those first few episodes of Dragon Ball.
Grew up on the portuguese dub on tv, and wouldn't discover the original version until muuuuuuch much later.
