Re: Would the manga have benefited from being in full color?
I think Episode of Bardock shows (by comparison) just how good Toriyama was at flat black and white stuff. It's well balanced on the page, crisp, clear... So yeah, I'd like a full colour version, but we should acknowledge that, whether through effort or natural talent, Toriyama was pretty amazing with what he used.

Re: Would the manga have benefited from being in full color?
I wouldn't say it would benefit from being in color, but I do love the kind of washed out colors in the Kanzenbans and Vizbigs. I think that would be a nice touch for a version of the entire manga.
As for full color like an American comic, no I don't think it would compliment DB, but maybe I'm just nostalgic.
I'm perfectly happy with the way it is though.

Yeah, they did a really good job with those.Kingdom Heartless wrote:

It's not the creators (unless they actually are self-published). It's how Japan manages to run an industry of weekly, phone-book-sized manga magazines. To get those out in such volume and with such a quick schedule, they use cheap, black-and-white news print to reduce cost.Mewzard wrote:I suppose Next Dimension spoiled me, but seeing a manga I like in full color really makes me want to see more manga do the same. Even if most creators can't afford to do it, why not some of the bigger names? It's like with America; just because something's a standard, doesn't mean we can't get a few books now and again that don't follow said standard.
I suppose a standard of black and white art also helps the artists stay on pace as well.
Finally, it also keeps tankobons cheap, which are a lot of series' bread and butter.
Mainstream American comics may be in color, but they're also enormously more expensive, in both single-issue and trade form.
Re: Would the manga have benefited from being in full color?
Of course, the publishers generally have say, but I imagine a creator could at least pitch the idea to their editor or publisher and see what comes of it. That said, I do imagine price and speed are two solid reasons...yet, how much of a difference is price?Cipher wrote:It's not the creators (unless they actually are self-published). I only have one experienced sample to work with, but my previous full color import ran me ¥750 for 150 pages (not counting that $40 import cost...*letting the volumes stockpile*). More expensive than B&W volumes of similar page counts, but it's still not that much more for what I find to be a nice addition. I'd be more than glad to pay an extra 4-5 dollars a volume for that to be the norm.

Normally, I wouldn't bump my topic (at least, not on Kanzenshuu...GameFAQs? Yeah, but not Kanzenshuu), but my topic just became much more relevant:

Mike and Co seem to have confirmed that the manga is getting a full color re-release...I'm shocked. I wanted it, that's why I made this topic, but I didn't think it would actually happen...

Non sure if it's been mentioned anywhere in this topic already, but...
Shueisha did release the first story arc of Dragon Ball in color on one of their websites a while back. It was in both Japanese AND English. And free. Best thing ever. XD

Do want. Oh so much.
With fewer Vizisms, hopefully, if it comes here.

I'm excited for this if only to get the DBZ portion of the manga finally.
Provided it is released in English, of course.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Not really interested unless they do the full run of the manga. I don't want a forced, partial collection.
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
I would still buy it just for the novelty of having the manga completely in color; if it's just these three volumes, they won't break your bank, I'd think.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:Not really interested unless they do the full run of the manga. I don't want a forced, partial collection.
Bleach recently put out omnibus-type re-releases that were pretty much 3-in-1 volumes with newly drawn covers and some new omake comics. I hope we get something along those lines. In fact, I'll just say now it'll be disappointing if Toriyama himself does not draw new covers at the very least!

I wonder if these will be released volume-by-volume, or as a complete set? Were the Kanzenban released simultaneously?

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
It's not an issue of money, it would be my inner OCD fanboy at work. For me personally, just a couple of volumes in color would annoy me to no end. If I can't have the whole series in color, then I don't want any of it. It's not like I'm saying I wish they wouldn't do the release because it's not the complete series, as I know others actually do want this, I'm just saying I won't be buying one that is incomplete in my eyes.B wrote:I would still buy it just for the novelty of having the manga completely in color; if it's just these three volumes, they won't break your bank, I'd think.
I'm in the same boat with Funimation releasing the Z Dragon Boxes and not the other portions of the series. It's getting on my nerves too, but I have to suffer with it because the DBoxes are much better quality and I already got rid of the Orange Bricks and I refuse to buy that crap again. xD

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
I agree. As much as I want this, if it's not the entire series (or, at least, the "Z" portion) then I'm not going to spring for it.
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
I basically had a happiness siesure when I read the news, but I'm only so excited because this might trigger the re-release of the entire series. I really hope it's the kanzenbans (though the Saiyan arc takes up three and a bit volumes in that) and that this causes the whole manga to get a colour release. Viz will certainly feel the need to release a colour version in English, and if it's colour kanzenbans that means we get kanzenbans too, just coloured.
We've had so much good news, this is just the greatest time to be a Dragon Ball fan.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
This is really interesting news! Not sure I want to collect the series again, already have the manga 2 1/2 times, ha ha, but I'm very curious to see how these volumes look! If they looked good and they were starting at the beginning, I'd probably get volume one. Not really interested in rebuying the Saiyajin Arc, personally.
Anyway, I don't want to start whining before we even see some examples, but it's hard for me to imagine the original series with digital colors. Toriyama's watercolors were so integral to the feel of the series, that the smooth, possibly garish, computer colors are most-likely gonna rub me the wrong way. Also, how are they going to handle the pages that are already colored? On one hand, it would seem like a shame (a crime even!
) to color OVER Toriyama's original colors, but it also seems like those pages side-by-side with DBSD-style colors would be strange...
Definitely going to keep an eye on how this develops....

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Saint Seiya sequel has been made in color since the beggining, while Dragon Ball on the other hand would be a process of adding color to black-and-white pages.Mewzard wrote:It's not like manga hasn't gone full color before; Masami Kurumada's Saint Seiya: Next Dimension (official sequel/prequel) was done in full color, and it looks nice:
For comparison, here is an image from the original Saint Seiya manga, and poster of sort with later added colors. While it is not so bad, it is obviously different:

On top of that, the new colored pages seems to base the color scheme on the anime. An example of inconsistency beetween the original manga and "deluxe" pages is Orphee's cloth, which obviously has been changed due to the anime:

And I am quite sure they would commit the same mistake with Dragon Ball. If the manga was to be full in color, we would not get to see the original blue Shenlong or purple Nimbus (of course, Toriyama's own inconsistencies doesn't help).
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
I really love the soft color palette of the original Dragonball color chapters. However if they do try to emulate the original color chapters in this serialization, I hope they don't use color as sparingly as they did in the Kanzenban release. The original chapters in Weekly Jump had a lot more bodies of color (backgrounds, textboxes) which really just added to the overall visual aestheticism, as seen in this Kanzenshuu feature.
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
I assume it's Tankobon? Unless it's Kanzenban, I don't care.
I also don't care if they go on and use the anime colors. They'd better consult with Toriyama.
