Since the box sets were so huge, and only like once a year, I really didn't find it to be that bad to collect. In the end I think they were well worth it, so I wouldn't say you're crazy or anything for buying them. Even if you don't understand Japanese very well right now, it would've been a shame if you let the Dragon Boxes slip away. In the end I think they were a good investment, and I can only see them increasing in value as the years progress (not that I'd ever sell them).

Besides, if you think DragonBall is crazy, try collecting a series like One Piece. I'm too impatient to wait for a box set, so I end up paying through the teeth for the single DVDs...

Try Detective Conan. 400+ episodes and FUNimation's only releasing three episode DVDs every other month. T_T; No boxsets, either.

MajinVegetaXV, you said Buffy was meant to be viewed in 4:3, despite being shot in 16:9. I doubt that's the case here, as the movies were animated--unlike TV, extra unwanted stuff can't be mistakenly shot--whatever the artists draw is whatever they wanted to draw.

I'd prefer the full screen originals, but hey, this is a Dragon Box, and really wish I had collected the others--I'm not going to make the same mistake again. The Dragon Book, scouters, trailers, etc. seal the deal

All I can say is, at 50,000 Yen plus tax, the "New Print Component Masters" that they're touting had better be anamorphic and fucking pristine. :?

Nobody's gonna pay 50,000 yen. I paid 40,000 + 2000 shipping for the GT box, which is what I expect to end up paying for this movie box. That works out to about $21.50 per movie, which is less than what FUNimation is charging. Not to mention all the extras that this set includes, I'd say it's a more than reasonable price.

What do you mean nobody's gonna pay 50,000 yen? The price has been announced, officially, as 50,000 yen. Go to the website...

Or are you saying they're gonna reduce the price? What's going on?

Preorder Prices are going to be atleast 20% off.

The only thing I can think of that has a strike against it is including both DB and Z movies in the same box. As they are theoretically parts of slightly different properties, wouldn't it make sense to do two boxes, one smaller one for DB, and another for Z?

But regardless, it doesn't matter.

Amazon my friend. 50,000 yen is what it costs to buy straight from Toei. But who actually buys it straight from Toei? (we can't anyways, since we don't have a Japanese address)

Just go to pre-order the box from Amazon sometime in late December, and I can almost guarantee you a price point of 40,000 yen, or maybe even less. They also use flat-rate shipping (about $20 express), so there's another huge bonus.

WARNING: do not buy box sets from CD Japan
They charge full retail price and charge shipping based on weight (which is expensive). CD Japan is only good for buying single disks, or for orders with multiple items.

This would end up costing more money in the long run, and most people would probably want both boxes anyways, so...

Amazon has it for pre-order already. And man, it's a damn good discount IMO. Subtract the tax, it's 39,000 yen. Click.

Still working on the learning of the Japanese though, which makes me doubly insane I suppose ;)

In that case I have a feeling you and I are going to be great friends.

Ordered!

My bad, pre-order ENDS December 21. If you want this box, don't wait until late December order it NOW!

You won't get charged until it ships, so just make sure that you can round up about $350-400 by that time!

*grumbles to self*

Pre-ordered...

This whole widescreen nonsense totally ruins a couple projects I had planned. I'm either going to have to find some really clever and artistic way around it for at least one of them, and/or (*giant sigh*) use FUNimation's discs, which won't even be complete until Kami-knows-when... ;_;

Still, be nice to finally have one of the boxes...

*grumbles to self more*

EDIT: Just noticed that there's 8 discs with all the movies. That's great. What about extras, though? Weren't we supposed to get all sorts of crazy-cool stuff in response to the poll they did? Hopefully they'll announce something else as time goes on.

The last disk only has the Anniversary special, so I'm sure the extras will be tagged onto that disk (like with the DB box they mixed the extras with the last 3 episodes). They'll probably also have the previews and TV spots with the appropriate movies on the various disks.

Anyways, about the pre-order, I'd recommend that everybody who's even slightly interested in this set pre-order it ASAP. You have up until early March to cancel the order, so I'd say it's better to be safe and just get your reservation in before the December 21 deadline. If it's approaching March and you don't have the money/change your mind, then just cancel the order. However, this time there really shouldn't be any excuses for not making the order deadline, so if you think you might want it, at least make the reservation (don't worry, it's not finalized until the shipping process begins, but I'd recommend cancelling by March 1 if necessary).

Get you reservations in ASAP!

EDIT: 39,000 + 2000 express shipping

Total = $355.70 US / $420.49 CN

(Note: Exchange rate charges will be those at the time of shipping. Also expect a customs bill several months down the line, probably in the area of $60 US / $75 CN - at the absolute most - unlikely though)

Ah, the express shipping. Tell me, have you or anyone else here had a problem with it? I just want to know, because I went and selected the cheap-man's route. If it's worth paying extra, though, I may change my shipping selection.

Oh, and pre-dang-diddly ordered. 8)

I've gotten 1 DragonBox through CD Japan (wasn't comfortable with Amazon, had one bad experience at that point) and the other three through Amazon.co.jp...no customs bills on any of them. They were all marked gifts though.

Nah, never had a problem, and always had the box in my hands within 2-3 days. Good stuff it is. Doesn't it autoupgrade you to express on this order anyway, or is this one not expensive enough?

In my experience express shipping from Amazon Japan actually takes longer to deliver than regular shipping.
The reasons are monotonous and mainly bureaucratic, but regardless, I'd go with the cheaper option.

Nah, oddly enough they gave me the choice of either standard or express shipping. Just figured I'd ask, because I've also heard of banged up boxes, delivery men signing for packages (even when people are home) and a few other odd things.

Hm, never had that problem with DHL. Keep in mind the Dragon Boxes come *extremely* well packed, and Amazon doesn't pack them. They just put the pre-packaged box from Toei in a box of their own and ship it. I don't use them too often, but I trust them for this (and my Kanzenban manga collection, which came in pretty good shape).

Pay the extra $10. The absolute worst that can happen is that it'll get stuck at customs, which would happen with the cheap shipping anyways. The express is much faster, comes with online tracking, and requires a signature from the recipient upon delivery (delivery men can't sign for the packages, it's a federal offense). It's the safest way to go.
