Why does Goku hate Cell?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Piccolo:
Goku beat Piccolo = no longer a threat him so gives Piccolo a Senzu

Vegeta:
Goku and crew chase off Vegeta= do not give him a Senzu (not that he had any on deck at the time) but let him live so he can test his strength against the last survivor of his race

Freeza:
Goku handily outclasses 100% Freeza= give cut in half 100% some energy because Freeza is no longer a threat to him

Fat Boo:
Goku says to Vegeta that he could have beat fat boo when they first fought but held back when he saw what the squirts [Goten and Trunks] could do...again Goku outclassed an opponent so he does not need to make sure that the opponent is not a threat to the Earth because Goku already could save the earth

Cell:
Goku wants Cell dead because the only person who could contend with him was Mr. Disappointment, his first born, the ultimate let down choke extraordinaire...the kid could have saved Earth with no casualties but he gets his Dad and Trunks killed -_- ...Seriously after a year with Gohan trapped in a room Goku would rather stay dead than see him. All kidding aside Cell outclassed Goku so Goku wants to make sure he can be put down and Gohan was being cocky so he emphatically tells Gohan to kill the guy before Cell does anything terrible...HOLD UP! Cell inflates self to blow up planet and all cuz Mr. Disapointment did what he did best...let down his team...without Vegeta blasting Cell it seems to me that Cell would have won.
Piccolo is still a threat. Goku barely won. Both Vegeta and Freeza are capable of showing up out of nowhere the next day and blowing up the planet. Vegeta was actually going to do this until he found out that Freeza was after the Dragon Balls. Goku sparing Buu ended up with the death of practically the entire human race. Oops.
Goku > greater than all of them at the point of those moments. (except Vegeta, he needed help with that one). Goku knew all of Piccolo's moves by that point Piccolo was beaten...the manga makes that pretty darn clear...with no functioning limbs Goku beat Piccolo. Freeza had one arm and just a shared bit of Goku's energy, Freeza was not a threat. Goku continuously said (paraphrasing) "so what what if everyone gets killed by Boo we have the dragon balls...by all accounts I should not even be here this is a fight for those who are alive it's their world." Even Piccolo offers up all of the Earthlings to Super Boo to stall for time.

So again Cell was a much bigger threat at that moment because the planet's fate was in the hands of an 11 year old boy who had a track record for failing to come through.
Goku was on the verge of death when he beat Piccolo. They were so close that it could have gone either way if they fought again. Piccolo is much smarter than Goku, and he knows all of his moves as well.
It doesn't matter how strong Goku is if Vegeta or Freeza decided to blow up the Earth.
Except Pure Buu destroyed the Dragon Balls. Goku had totally forgotten about the ones on Namek; Vegeta thought of those. And Goku sparing Buu still resulted in everyone dying.

Also, Goku would've died from that giant hole in his torso had his friends not been there with senzus. And Vegeta just kicked Goku's ass. And Freeza always could've just nuked Earth from orbit...

...I still have no idea how Piccolo was in worse shape after that than Goku was after that fight. He got headbutted by a half dead Goku while Goku got his guts blown out and all of his limbs crippled.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, Goku sparing Freeza saved the Earth; had he not done that, the King Cold would've shown up alone and nuked the planet from orbit.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

How would Cold ever have known about Earth if Freeza was dead?

failing: Napa incident
failing: when Piccolo is knocked unconscious after grabbing tail Gohan again chickens out
failing: gets Piccollo killed because he does not DODGE!

failing: Kuririn tells Gohan to keep his Ki down but instead he goes all roid rage and saves Dende (yes it works out but that could have easily been the the death of Kurirn and Gohan by Dedoria)

Red: He's a 5 year old being thrown in a life and death battle against his wishes. Telling a four year old to kill someone, way to be smart guys and ignore he is 4. And how does failing to kill someone stronger than you count as his fault. Getting Piccolo killed was his fault though as he didn't just move.

Blue: He saved the kid because it was the right thing to do. Goku would have done the same if he went to Namek instead. Second one is his fault.

Yellow: Gohan isn't going to let Dende die to hide that fact, Goku would have done the same thing if a friend was threatened (Goku did the same with Daimao and risked getting himself killed). Gohan is also going to help Piccolo because he was in trouble. Of course he couldn't kill Freeza, but he got him off of Piccolo.

Green: Dende went himself to heal Piccolo. Gohan didn't tell him anything. Gohan mentioned to Piccolo Dende could heal him and Dende flew over after he refused to heal Vegeta. Which is not his fault. Last one isn't even a failure. If you count the anime then he went to try and hold Freeza until the planet would kill him. (which wouldn't help as he would survive)

The last one is hardly his fault as Kaioshin doesn't even bother mentioning Boo's absorption ability. That's kinda important. He already heard about Gotenks beating up Super Boo and he could fight him off if needed. There was no way he could know about absorption. What was his fault was missing the earring (seriously how'd he miss it).

Goku does similar shit all the time.

Age seems to be the over arching reason as to why you don't consider Gohan's fails to be actual fails. No 4 year old in real life can survive what Gohan survived. It seems to be a double standard that in your view we should suspend disbelief as to what he is physically capable of yet accept his other shortcomings due to age?

Goku doing similar stuff like disobeying his wisened comrades? Rushing off against Tamborine ok and taking on Piccolo daimo ok but that is again not chickening out or getting anyone other than himself seriously harmed. The closest thing I can think of to getting Dende killed is maybe when he takes on Tao Pai Pai after Bora got killed but again no one got hurt because of his actions unlike Dende. No one that I can think of other than Piccolo against Freeza taking the death beam gets hurt protecting Goku. I don't consider them fighting Vegeta protecting Goku (you can to make your point but that whole fray was glorious chaos)

In fact Goku punches Gohan in the face to keep him from rushing off like a dumb ass against Cell when Piccolo gets hurt.

Goku eventually jumps in but as clean up crew to get Tienshinan and Piccolo from cell and doesn't get them or himself any more injured. Gokus track record for getting injured is extensive but Gohans record for getting others and or himself injured is vastly longer.

Gohan chokes and has many instances of doing so. Gokus right to freak out and think Gohan would and could screw up against Cell...and he did...he got Goku AND Trunks killed because he didn't finish off Cell when he should have...that's not even considering how much stronger he essentially allowed Cell to become after recovering from exploding himself.

Goku didn't let Vegeta or Piccolo go out of mercy, and neither were out to destroy the universe. Even Freeza didn't want to destroy the universe, as bad as he was, and yes, I do think Goku finally learned his lesson about leaving that kind of evil live.

You seem to be ignoring that Goku sparing Buu allowed for the death of the entire human race. That alone puts his death count immeasurably higher than Gohan's,

Goku only spared him because of a retcon. Toriyama made a point of showing Gohan being scared. I have no problem with that storypoint for Gohan, it was interesting, but I'm tired of people trying to paint Goku as a villain. He's saved the universe numerous times. If Vegeta can be forgiven, Goku should be as well. Plus, he was right, the Dragon Balls could cure the damage.

It is pretty interesting how Goku could never bring himself to finish any of his opponents, but has no problem telling his 9 year old son to murder someone.

Because Gohan was supposed to give up any chance at a normal life so daddy could go hang out with a bunch of dead guys? Goku dumped that responsibility on Gohan; Gohan didn't choose it. If Goku had, you know, actually taken time to get to know his son, then he would have known not to do that.

Later on, he takes what he says himself is a gamble, and spares Fat Buu. How is this any better than Vegeta allowing Cell to get his Perfect Form? Goku even manages to destroy a tenth of the Earth in the process of the fight, since he held back enough for Buu to deflect his blast. And Goku even admits later on that he could have prevented all of this by killing Fat Buu.

How is it a necessary evil? Goku could still teach fusion to the kids after beating Buu. Assuming his time ran out, he could use Kaio's telepathy to teach them. They could ask the Dragon Balls to allow him to come back briefly and teach fusion. There are numerous ways to pass the torch without resulting in the death in the human race, most of whom were killed by Fat Buu, not Super Buu. What Piccolo did was a necessary evil, since there was no one capable of beating Buu yet. And he at least looked like he felt bad about it.

And since when is it okay to let people get killed, just because, "We have Dragon Balls! They'll get better!" Since when is okay to let people die, just because they can be brought back? Why does Goku have the moral authority to place the fate of the universe on a couple of kids? And later on, Pure Buu destroyed the Dragon Balls, and Goku didn't have a clue what to do, Dende was the one who mentioned those, while Goku stood there with a stupid look on his face.

Goku also allowed Vegeta to hurt him enough to release Buu in the first place, when he could have ended the fight in seconds if he wanted. But because he wanted to spare "poor wittle Vegeta's" feelings, Buu was able to get free. The immediate consequence was the death of Vegeta, which again, Goku could have prevented, and the supposed death of his son. But instead of wiping out the bastard who killed his son, he holds back so his other son, who is 7, and had never been in a serious fight before, could do it.

If you want to add in the anime, it's even worse. Goku could have ended the Buu threat at any time in the arc, yet instead, he sat on his ass in the Kaioshin realm.

As for more dumbass Goku moments...
1. He let Raditz's tail go in their fight.
2. He spared Vegeta, who was beaten by sheer dumb luck, and who initially planned to show up the next day and blow up the planet.
3. He could have ended the Freeza Arc in minutes if he wanted. He could have flown to the Ginyus, one shotted all of them, Kaio-Crushed Captain Ginyu, and Kaip-Kenx10'd Freeza before he had a chance to transform. But nope. Gotta give the mass murdering galactic monsters a fair chance.
4. He decides to let Freeza power up to 100%.
5. He spared Freeza, the head of an interstellar empire, who also decided to come kill everyone on his planet.
6. He chose to do nothing to stop Gero. He wouldn't even have to kill him, just use the Dragon Balls to find out where he was, show up, and blow up his lab. Repeat every few years.
7. Instead of just teleporting Cell and coming right back with Kaio and Bubbles, he first has to have a little dialogue with Gohan.

Goku is one of those people that his intentions and overall good hearted nature save him from being vilified for his poor decisions. Taken in a different light, Goku could be considered a real jerk, but he's just a buffoon. He doesn't mean any harm and doesn't realize the consequences of his actions.

Goku has endangered the fate of the universe several times for his own selfish reasons for wanting to fight stronger opponents.

Goku has endangered the fate of the universe several times for his own selfish reasons for wanting to fight stronger opponents.
The thing is, allowing for suspension of disbelief, I could ignore everything except for letting Gero make the Androids, and the Buu Arc stuff.
The first was just stupid. They were told that the Androids would ravage the Earth, but instead of stopping the guy, they just go "he hasn't done anything bad yet." You know, other than being a leading member of an organization bent on taking over the world, but meh. Details.

The second just makes Goku into a callous asshole.

But wanting his son to finish off another one of those dangers is murder?

Hence my problem with the Dragon Balls.

It doesn't make him into a callous asshole, it only seems like that. Toriyama doesn't plan stuff out. When Goku doesn't finish off Buu, it's because he couldn't. He told Piccolo that. However, when the story neccessitates Goku be brought back and be strong enough to fight an even stronger form of Buu, then Toriyama has to scramble to find an explanation. That retcon makes Goku come off as an ass, still not as big as Vegeta. I wouldn't even call him an ass, he's not doing it to be a dick, he's doing it out of naivete. Should the world be defended by the living?

Considering what he has done his whole life you don't think it's wrong? If it was Vegeta that's one thing, but practice what you preach. No?

Goku couldn't bring himself to kill anyone, but now his 9 year old son who's even more of a pacifist is supposed to?

He is a five year old who is expected to completely murder other Saiyans. A year before he was a book worm. Put two and two together and in all honesty if Piccolo thought he turned Gohan into a murderer than he is an idiot.

Goku chased after Tambourine and almost got himself killed when Roshi warned him not to. He failed to abide to the warnings about Daimao and almost got killed again. Way to go Goku. He was going to help Tenshinhan and live a bit longer and take punishment. If Piccolo didn't drop Tenshinhan like a dumbass and just all out attack Goku he would have won. He also let go of Raditz's tail like an idiot who expected him to put a body count on Muten Roshi's island. Gohan had nothing to do with Dende. Dende was already with Vegeta before he flew back to heal Picccolo. Gohan didn't even call him back. Dende knew Piccolo was hurt and healed him then. Technically he did help keep Goku alive against Vegeta after Goku failed to beat him. Goku thought it was a good idea to let Vegeta live which was stupid as if Freeza wasn't going for the Namek Balls then Vegeta would have returned to earth and destroyed it. Goku also thought it was a good idea to spare Freeza. If Freeza had listened to Cold he would have blew up earth from orbit. So he got extremely lucky there otherwise his friends and planet would be dead. Goku also thought it was a good idea to let the Cyborgs be born. Way to risk the earth for a selfish fight even though Gero has already shown he is evil so the claim he hasn't done anything yet is ridiculous. He was the brain of the red ribbon army, how the hell does that not count for anything. True Goku stopped Gohan from getting himself killed but Goku was the idiot who never learned about his own son. He believed his son was just like him and expected him to off Cell no problem. His poor fathering cost him his life. SSJ originally caused massive emotional effects, he was treading in unknown territory as SSJ2 would effect the emotions even worse than SSJ. Gohan changed from a kind person into a psycho who enjoyed Cell's suffering. If Goku bothered to ask Gohan how he felt then he would have probably helped sort things out for Gohan and himself. To be honest Gohan was out of character when fighting as he had no problem killing Freeza to save everyone, but all the sudden he couldn't just kill Cell. If Goku payed an iota of attention to his kids then he would realize that Gohan doesn't like killing. But Goku selfishly never seems to take interest in anyone else's feelings which has always been aparent. Gohan never expected he would do anything which Goku probably should have told him about his plan, but instead opted to not inform him expecting his son to be just like him like all bad father's (even Toriyama calls him a terrible father). He also gave Cell a senzu which was completely stupid and risked everyone on earth if Gohan didn't mange to transform. Way to go Goku  . Goku then pulls the same shit again with Goten and Trunks. He expects them to go into a life and death battle and fight for something that they shouldn't have to. Goku caused the birth of Boo so he should deal with it. If Goku didn't fight Vegeta or even show up for that matter, then Boo wouldn't be born. Yet he believes the boys should save the earth from a problem he caused. That logic is ridiculous. He shouldn't be forcing his ways onto his sons who time and time again show they want no part.

Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!
