Quite a few youngbloods on here. Taped quite a few eps off Toonami back in the day, including the tv version of "Tree of Might" with the PPG ep of Princess' first appearance after it due to the DBZ-like fight. Last time the early eps were playing on CN, I taped a majority of them on two tapes to have them.

Haha, oh man, you just had to remind me that I've got like two tote boxes full of VHS tapes, many taped off of TV with random labels like 'Cartoons', that I really, really want to pop into a VHS player eventually and see what the hell is on them.

For DBZ specifically, I can think of two tapes specifically that are full of Toonami recordings and the like. The first is pretty much everything from when I first got into the series, so basically the Super Saiyan Goku V.S. Frieza stuff. Every other DBZ episode though is some episodes of the tail end of Tenchi Universe, since I was also into Tenchi at the time. Towards the very end of the tape should be a random episode of Digimon (early season 2 I think), and the rest of the tape is padded out with various anime opening themes I managed to record off of TV, because even back then I was a total nerd and liked having stuff like that. The second tape I know for sure I have is a similar situation, only it's stuff from the late Trunks/early Androids saga airings, mixed in with Tenchi in Tokyo, and more Digimon at the end before going into various anime opening/endings.

I know I also had the three Ocean dubbed movies taped off of Toonami at some point too, but I honestly can't remember if they were all on one tape or what else might have been on there with them, or anything like that.

Actually, yeah! I was digging through the ol' VHS tapes looking for some taped Thanksgiving specials (family tradition), and since I didn't label my tapes as a kid, I have to watch them to determine what's on them. I got distracted for like an hour watching a taped episode of (then still Ocean-dubbed) DBZ and "Ronin Warriors" on Toonami, complete with all the old promos and commercials. Major nostalgia trip!
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

I think it's more about what's been recorded on these VHS tapes. Commercials, certain bumpers, network tags... Watching DBZ in this format with all this in place is a real nostalgia trip and I totally get why people love these.

I get more nostalgic on the ones my old man taped back in the 80s and early 90s. Seeing old commercials of lady and puppet from a local kids show brought many memories to some friends of mine when we were watching a tape with Tiny Toons from their original broadcasts.

One of the very first shows I recorded, with my new fancy 'Video Capture Card' was a Dragon Ball Z episode lol, It was the 'Goku is Ginyu, Ginyu is Goku' episode. Back when it was first airing here in New Zealand. I think I still have the digital video file on a CD somewhere too lol

Yes! But they are long gone and are to never be seen again. Sometime back in the day they got thrown out or stored somewhere. I would tape Toonami on days I couldn't get home by 4. I had Tenchi Muyo, Outlaw Star and Gundam Wing on there too lol.

O how I wish I would've kept those... my Toonami Tapes!

I do have some VHS tapes I recorded of DBZ (and Batman Beyond, too) from the Toonami days. I popped one in a few years ago to have some good old nostalgia, but unfortunately the audio was near non-existent now, I could barely hear anything. And the video quality wasn't that great either.. I guess I used the cheapest tapes in the lowest quality settings to record the episodes, and now I'm paying the price for it. :( I had cut out the commercials too to make more room for episodes, which I wish I didn't do because commercials can be a big part of the nostalgia trip too.

If someone here has complete broadcasts of Toonami stuff from back in the day, you should definitely digitize them and upload them for the community. I'm sure many of us would love this!

Batman Beyond! Or in the Uk Batman of the Future lol
Yeah, I know what you mean, SP and LP? When, I was younger I was always baffled by why there was a SP option, I was like who in there right mind would chose SP over LP.

Oh yeah, I got tons! There's a couple boxes full of VHS tapes shoved in a closet that contain such gems as fansub tapes (yes, kids, there was a time when you couldn't just download everything!), copies of official tapes (one person buys something and all the friends copy it...old school pirating! :shh: ), and the various things I taped from TV. Let's take a dip into the box and see what I find...

Yeah, that definitely shows the mix of the different kinds of tapes I have, including tapes filled with random episodes of several different series, labeled with my young, still unsure hand in Japanese.

For Dragon Ball Z, I'm pretty sure I have the entire edited dub taped off Toonami. I didn't bother to record the original Dragon Ball or GT, because the DVDs were already coming out by the time they aired (I think?). Most probably do not have any commercials or promos, since I was typically watching them and cutting out all the excess stuff as I recorded. But there may be some that were recorded on a timer that have everything intact...I'm not sure, since I don't think I've watched any of these old tapes since purchasing the DVDs.

I also have raw Japanese recordings from the International Channel, starting from around the Cell Games and going all the way to the end of GT (some of these DO have the commercials still included, many of which are hilarious. There was one for some breast growth drug that always made me laugh  ). There was a time when I guess I must have been in denial about VHS going obsolete, because I thought that since I had the International Channel recordings of the Japanese version, and the Toonami recordings of the English version, why should I bother buying DVDs for the Cell Games onward? So for Funimation's single disc releases, I only ever purchased up to the point where my International Channel recordings began. By the time the orange bricks came out, though, I realized that my VHS recordings weren't going to cut it, so I bought those releases in full (only to later shove them aside for the Dragon Boxes :D )

Batman Beyond is/was the shit! I'm already a Batman fan as it is, so Beyond was just as awesome.

Yeah, I recorded all of my DBZ tapes on LP so I could shove as many episodes into one tape as possible. Quantity over quality. But that seemed to have made my tapes near unusable now. :(

Some of the labels on my VHS tapes are either coming off or the writing is getting hard to see, I'm going to have to re-watch all those VHS and make a new inventory. I only have one tape with Japanese subtitled episodes of Dragonball Z (vegetto saga) and the quality is horrible  I remember winning it in a DBZ contest on some fansite which I don't remember the name, but I have it written somewhere.

Would anyone happen to have any VHS recordings of Cyborg 009 episodes 36, 39-43. I've been looking everywhere for those episodes in English dub. Also if anybody from Australia has the Cyborg 009 God's War OVA episodes 49-51 (english dub), I heard those episodes did air in Australia.

I'd be totally interested in seeing fansubs, preferably with it having the commercials left in. Isn't it normal for the ads to be cut out in fansubs?

I don't know how fansubbers recorded, but I would always try to cut out the commercials when I recorded Funi dub episodes off of Toonami for the sake of getting as many episodes as I could on each tape; I'm sure there must be some where I wasn't home and had to set it to record--thus ending up having to keep the commercials--though.
Thing is, I had no labeling system. It might've said dbz on it, but you wouldn't know what episodes until you popped it in the vcr.
On hiatus.

I need these. Please, for Canadian dub fans everywhere, release your digital copies. You'd be considered a hero amongst many. Truth.

Believe it or not, I used to loyally tape every episode of DBZ on CN on VHS tape, at least throughout the week, before I taped over with the next week's (I used a new tape only when I really wanted to save certain episodes). I would even sit next to the VCR and turn off the record function during commercials so I wouldn't have to fast forward at the end of the week when I marathoned them and could fit more on one tape.

And this was even after getting into the Japanese version.

Is there a chance you could release them online? I know many people want to get the Westwood dub, but the rips online are sometimes incomplete (they lack previews or various chunks, for example).
