You love to pick out the bad parts of Dragonball. Ugh-uh, worst part of the Dragonball TV series? That has to be the last few filler episodes.thatdbzguy wrote:The Cell saga was by far the worst saga in DBZ. But, what would you consider the first half of Dragon Ball's worst arc?
I'd have to go with the Red Ribbon arc, but only because it dragged on for too long. It's still well-written, unlike Cell, but I don't think it needed to be as long as it was.

I thought those were kinda okay. I don't remember them very well, though...Hrm.sangofe wrote:You love to pick out the bad parts of Dragonball. Ugh-uh, worst part of the Dragonball TV series? The "Cell Saga of Dragon Ball. Hm. That's a bit of an odd way to phrase it, since you're kinda making the assumption that everyone shares the same opinion as you, which I'm fairly sure that isn't the case. It'd be kinda nice if you eased up on repeating these points in every second post that you make and perhaps put more of a positive spin on your discussions every so often. I'm not saying you should't have those opinions and you shouldn't share them, it just gets a little tiresome to read them over and over. I don't like the fact that I have to roll my eyes whenever I see a thread you've made or whatever.
Anyway, I'd have to a agree with the people who are saying the Red Ribbon Arc. Well, it's either that or the 'Pilaf' stuff. The thing with the Pilaf Arc, is that I'm not huge on some of Toriyama's humour (don't get me wrong, there's still a lot of funny stuff), but I kinda have a soft spot for it since it is the first part of the story and it's where it all began, etc. Red Ribbon Arc, I haven't actually seen or read the whole way through; but when I think about it, all that comes to mind is it dragging on and on, with several different parts to the story that don't seem to make sense together, unless you actually watch/read it right the way through- if that makes any sense (I think what I'm trying to say is that its kind of disjointed). There are some fun things in there like the Dr. Slump stuff, Goku storming the base, Bulma's parents, and Tao Pai-Pai, but overall it does feel like the most forgettable. Strangely enough, it did produce two movies though- one of them being my favourite in the whole franchise, so I dunno. Maybe it's quite a popular portion of the series in Japan? Or maybe this is a testament to its dragged out nature. The fact that it can be reduced to a 40/80 minute feature might be saying something about that....

Buu saga was the worst, he was the worst villain and the fights were the most pointless. Not to mention it introduced the fact that Goten, Trunks and Goten are superior to Goku and Vegeta just because they're next in-line. In the cell saga, everyone earned exactly what they had. In the Buu saga it was nothing but handouts.
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.
Re: The "Cell saga" of Dragon Ball?
I would have to agree that the Buu arc is less stable than even the Cell arc was. From the time Buu first splits until the point little Buu blows up the earth is just a ton of weirdness and nonsense. Gotenks is built up to be the savior of the world, gets discarded. Gohan is built up to be the REAL savior of the world, gets discarded. Goku and Vegeta come out of nowhere, fuse into basically God, then somehow end up fighting in the Kaioshin realm shortly thereafter? Just a mess. At least it was a good deal of fun, though. The fact it didn't take itself as seriously as the Cell arc makes the weird storytelling a touch more tolerable.SingleFringe&Sparks wrote:Buu saga was the worst, he was the worst villain and the fights were the most pointless.
