I like the Japanese movie cards because they're part of the original film. I feel like by removing them, you're losing part of the movie.JEFFMAN219 wrote: No offense dude but I like the English title cards for the movies better because many of Japanese title cards for the movies flat out suck. If your takeaway from Jake's thread and analysis was "all the Japanese titles are awful", you didn't actually read what was written there.JEFFMAN219 wrote:No offense dude but I like the English title cards for the movies better because many of Japanese title cards for the movies flat out suck. The blurays are nice as well! They're from the same masters but for some reason I feel the DVD contains a more film like quality.

Re: Funimation DBZ movie packs
It honestly depends on which movies you want. Hard to beat the price of the collection, but if you're only in the market for one or two of the movies they're probably worth the extra money. Plus, the steelbooks are just awesome to display.Kingdom Heartless wrote:Is it worth grabbing the Blu-ays over the DVDs?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
If Hermes hadn't posted it you probably wouldn't even be saying that, but despite it, it all comes down to preferences and I prefer the original titles because that's what they were made in mind with, plus they look better.JEFFMAN219 wrote:No offense dude but I like the English title cards for the movies better because many of Japanese title cards for the movies flat out suck. The English dubtitles are good but look pretty crappy and no cool font to it to make it stylish.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Re: Funimation DBZ movie packs
Doubt it. It's been years since FUNimation released the last Dragonbox. You'd think by now they would have some news if they were ever going to release Dragonbox: The Movies. I think that train has long passed, and FUNi, just like everybody else, is moving towards HD BD releases instead now. Dbox The Movies aren't in HD so I doubt they'll even bother anymore.JEFFMAN219 wrote:Wow the Dragon Box version of the movies looks nice as well. Maybe funimation will release it.
Hell, getting the whole Z series in Dragonbox format was a miracle in itself.

Why is the Japanese audio quality so low on these sets? I thought the movie audio was in stereo?

Re: Funimation DBZ movie packs
FUNimation's been pushing more and more into Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs in the last couple of years. I highly doubt we'll see a release of Dragon Box: The Movies on DVD unless it was a super-limited "for superfans only" type of promotion, similar to the orignal DBox run or the "Rock The Dragon" boxset.Daimakku wrote: Doubt it. Getting back to why the Double Features/Movie Packs have lower-quality Japanese audio than the singles. It's easy: they used a different set of masters for this release. This source was most likely a multi-generational film source that had lower-quality audio. Though in my experience, it only sounds bad if you're listening to it through TV speakers. A decent surround-sound setup actually gives it this really cool vintage film depth of sound, which leads me to believe these film sources may have been used in some kind of theatrical run.
I can't prove any of this and I'm most likely wrong, but that's my impression.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Re: Funimation DBZ movie packs
It's a shame that FUNi didn't reuse their existing Japanese audio for the double features, given how much better the older DVDs sound; Presumably FUNi used the inferior audio masters out of ignorance or carelessness. It sucks having both versions of DB movie 4 and knowing that one copy has worse sound and the other has worse audio.
Most of the movies were only mixed in mono though, although the 10th anniversary movie was in stereo (stereo refers to the number of audio channels. not the actual quality of the audio).

Re: Funimation DBZ movie packs
The movie audio is only dolby surround in the Janemba movie. Also, just because the audio is mono does mean that the quality is low. All mono means is that there is one sound channel, as opposed to two -- nothing else.JEFFMAN219 wrote:Why is the Japanese audio quality so low on these sets? I thought the movie audio was in stereo?
And despite the fact that the DB Box the movies release has been encoded in stereo, all of them are actually mixed in mono except for Movie 13 (trust me; this topic has been discussed to death on these forums). They are basically a pair of mono channels for Movies 1-12. However, they have created from a superior audio master so they sound way better compared to the Japanese tracks on the American releases. For the most part, the American DVDs source their audio from the "optical track" found on the masters that were given to FUNimation by TOEI.
I really feel like there should be a guide somewhere talking about the differences in mono and stereo in relation to Dragon Ball (besides my posts and ones by kei, MarcFBR, and a few others).
Poor quality sound will still be poor compared to the DB Box releases. You can still buy the DB Box the movies singles and enjoy the nice audio and video quality. The colors might be a tinted here and there, but overall it's great.theoriginalbilis wrote: Getting back to why the Double Features/Movie Packs have lower-quality Japanese audio than the singles. I'd imagine that the original DVD releases will probably not sound great to me after getting used to the Japanese releases of the movies. Correct if I'm wrong, but I would think that FUNimation doesn't have access to the original audio masters. Maybe they have a "good" copy of Movie 13's audio track.
Re: Funimation DBZ movie packs
I wouldn't mind a limited-release version of the Dragonbox movies, but I'm not holding my breath. It just seems like it's been too long and there was a problem getting the rights to the Dbox movies. Unless FUNimation has been holding out on us all this time.theoriginalbilis wrote:FUNimation's been pushing more and more into Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs in the last couple of years. I'd love a Dragonbox Dragonball release as well as GT, but at this point I'd rather just get the movies if possible. Or at least a Bardock/Trunks Dragonbox double-feature release. It's a crime to release all of Z in Dragonbox format but not the two specials. I consider the two specials part of the show too. I never marathon the series without watching the specials too.
