Aside from some of the VAs losing a step or two by the time Kai came out, the overuse of some Kikuchi tracks late in DBZ, and spoilerrific episode titles now and then? Other than those minor gripes, it's nearly perfect, in the sense that it conveys the story and characters expertly. I guess you can make an argument for the presence of filler, but that has less to do with the version's acting or music and more to do with the animation itself. It's out of the hands of the performers and composers.

The English dub, as has been established, is poorly written tripe with large swaths of completely invented dialogue that only has the bare bones to do with the intended meaning of scenes, and of course the horrifically terrible acting that plagued most of the entirety of its existence. People were actually paid money to just completely ignore the established characterizations in the original show and write a lot of stupid bullcrap that mischaracterized and defamed the players in the plot both in word and tone, obviously and clearly deliberately by a group of people who almost seemed to have an actual disdain for the material. The casting was done on the cheap, employing rank amateurs who sounded like random people they pulled off a street, many of whom barely improved over a decade's time and yet command thousands of fans who will not only defend their terrible acting but actually hound you endlessly if you dare criticize them. If I could somehow literally spit on the English dub itself, I would. It's an abomination.

The Japanese version of DB/Z is the actual show(s). The English version is some pale shadow.
Penguintruth, despite being very rude about it you are right and have made me agree with you
DBZ's English Dub is anything but DBZ it's a bastardized merican' adaption with a main character that seems closer to Superman than a guy who loves fighting for fun. There is music and diologe that are unnecessary, jokes that are not funny & actors that pale in comparison to the Japanese version. It's not 4Kids or Sentai Filmworks like skiping entire seasons (pretty close on to the latter though). The American Score (I refuse to credit just Falconeer) is fun to listen to alone but is horrible for the show.

But If there is one thing I hate it's reading a show, I like listing to it as I do something else which is impossible to do with subtitles, I also prefer watching a show in a language I know fully know. And My nostalgia boils whenever I watch the Cell Games & Buu Arcs.

But my nostalgia does not blind me to the horrible product that is the English Dub of DBZ And how superior the Japanese Product is.......
But Kai with Yamamoto score is the best Just my opinion and I will argue it to my grave.

There's really nothing I dislike about the original Japanese version, except for the fact that I don't know enough Japanese to watch it without reading the subtitles...and some of the filler is annoying, but that's not exclusive to that version. As for the dub, the voices seem really out of place and awkward to me because I'm so accustomed to the Japanese voice cast, and some of the voices, such as Goku's, seem to change the nature of the character completely, IMO. I also hated the dialogue changes and name changes of the original dub, as well as the music, however the Kai dub was a huge improvement.

... Not... really? You listed some awful dubs, yes, but in the grand scope of things, all of them, including Dragon Ball, are relics of their time(in addition to being aimed at children).

I've fallen off the wagon in regards to Naruto, for example, but its dub was, at its worst, better than FUNimation's non-Kai efforts. And if you want to keep it strictly FUNimation, One Piece's localization has been nigh excellent. I don't really understand the idea of "it's not the worst thing ever guys! Look at this worse thing over here! Now you are distracted enough to not criticize my dub for a few minutes!" I say "Look at this better thing over here! Why can't DB be this good? To be fair, the acting got better by the Buu arc, and the scripting got closer as well. There are episodes that are very faithful.

I like the Boo arc much better in the Funimation dub. I didn't like the scene with the Old KAI and Goku, that I couldn't enjoy any of it once it got to that part. The offering of groping in exchange for favors, "dirty steamy magazines", and Goku saying his sons' weren't as handsome as him, turned be off, and I hated his character. From the sub, it sounded to me like Goku was acting sleazy, which is against Goku's pure heart. Vegito and the Piccolo fused Super Boos bored me, whereas in the dub, they were some of my favorite fights and really fun dialogue exchanges.

EDIT: I think I completely misinterpreted the scene, and don't feel the same way about Goku's attitude. Sorry guys!

Why were you so turned off by Old Kaioshin's dirty behavior?

I think you're making too much of Goku's comment.

Funi Dub:

Things I like/love:

-The great music by Team Faulconer and also Jonson to an extent. Also Levy's score if I count the Saban dub
-The cheesey lines and humour
-Most of the voices/performances
-Goku's heroic characterization

Things I dislike:

-Annoying music playing during comedy scenes
-Unnecessary redubbing in the remastered sets
-Lots of important story flaws during Master Roshi's flashbacks

Japanese version:

Things I like/love:

-Kikuchi's music strictly in Pre-Z DB only though
-Nozawa's Goku is good. As are many of the other performances
-Greater consistency of actors and performances throughout the series
-Less plotholes

Things I dislike:

-Kikuchi's music was often boring and uninspired in Z. A lot of the time it wasn't even made specifically for the series but was recycled from the movies
-Spoilers in episode titles
-Lazy casting with the Son family who do all sound the same with minor alterations
-Filler somehow feels worse in Japanese

I... am at a loss to see how. Especially when followed up by this:

That's just it. It's a dub, not an adaptation. It should be the same show in a different language.

I only watch the English dub when I want to get some nostalgia going on. I know that the English Funimation dub is just a source of taking me back to my childhood and it's hard to take that seriously at this point in time.

The original English dub for the first three DBZ films also take me back. The only difference with that dub is that I actually respect the voice actors and the line deliveries for the most part. At this point I watch everything in DB in the original language since most of my watching is coming from a point of respecting the source material. But again, there are some times when I will watch the English dub out of re-experiencing my childhood.

They've changed my life - changed the way I act on the earth. Doesn't that make them kind of real? They might be imaginary but, but they're more important than most of us here. And they're all gonna be around here long after we're dead. So, in a way, those things are more realer than any of us.

If crude sexual humor puts you off, I'm kind of surprised you got through the whole series, to be honest.

I don't find dirty behavior enjoyable. I find him to be scum and that's not entertaining to me, it's repulsive, and even more so that kids might imitate his behavior, because Goku, the hero, encourages it.

It was a build up that made me get even more upset over Goku's comment, when normally, it wouldn't have been anything, but him using Gohan's girlfriend so the Kaioshin could sexual grope her, giggling over "dirty steamy magazines", insulted his wife's looks and commenting on not being as "bouncy" (or something, I don't remember the phrasing), and using Bulma again for sexual harassment, which I didn't not enjoy at all with Oolong in Dragon Ball. It's not cute or funny and it disgusts me. I liked in the english dub the replacement of Roshi using "Kissy Kissy" or "Smooches" and Goku's "dating". That didn't bug me at all.
I don't think you have much to worry about kids imitating Roshi's behavior.

In real life, this would be repugnant but it's all completely in jest and lighthearted. It's like when Bond gets a girl to sleep with him by his raw sexual magnetism, it's not meant to be taken at face value.

I really like the Faulconer music.

Not in the context of DBZ, of course. I mean I just like listening to some of the tracks by themselves.

Despite everything Toei has ever done, there's no difference between "Dragon Ball" and "Dragon Ball Z". They re-titled it, but they didn't suddenly create a new show or bring in a new staff or anything. It's not like the first TV series didn't do the same thing.

I really like the sub more for serious moments in Dragon Ball and for humor I like the Funimation dub. So I watch the funimation dub, until I get to the Piccolo arc, I like the Japanese more, and when I get to the Boo arc, being more humorous, I switch to the Funimation dub. Although, I really like them both throughout, using the english dub of KAI and the Boo arc, except after Super Boo kills Smitty in the Japanese, I dislike it.

I like all the Japanese voice actors more than those from Funimation except for Cell, Super Boo, Vegeta, kid Krillin, and Krillin. I think they're great in Japanese, but I love Chris Sabat's Vegeta in KAI. I love the two actors who played Krillin in the Funimation dub, and was very impressed how they got child and adult voices that matched so well. There's a charm to his voice that lends itself to the comedy. It's hard to explain, but it makes me happy!

Well, there is a point to be made that Dragon Ball created new music as the show went on whereas Z only made new music at the beginning of the show and at the Buu arc. The rest of the Z music is from the movies, though DB also used music from the movies.

Personally? Although I love Kikuchi's work in DB, his stuff in DBZ blows it out of the water.

If you're going to be a moral guardian about the dirty humor in DB/Z, stop reading/watching it and go read/watch something else. It's not for you.

Dragon Ball Z
  • Sub:
    • Likes:
      • Voice Acting and deliveries.
        Music.
The script's closeness to the manga.
      Dislikes:
      • The long silences with wind blowing and they just stare at each other.
Every now and then the animation has a character look like they are screaming or way more over the top but the delivery does not match the animation although it is in sync with the scene.
    Dub: episodes 1-67
    • Likes:
      • Voice acting and delivery of that script.
        The replacement music.
      Dislikes:
      • editing of gore and content
Peter Kelamis (38-53), awful Goku IMO
        Kaio sama's reversioning
Generally script changes that altered the actual story.
the re-dub of these episodes that are on the orange bricks and several other releases are just lackluster on a whole and the replacement US music was terrible.
    Dub: episodes 68-291
    • Likes:
      • Cheezy one liners! Love 'em! Feels like an old classic action movie. "He's toast...Yeah Burnt Toast" CLASSIC!
Voice acting and delivery of that script, the American voice actors nail this Americanized script.
Most of the Faulconer replacement music. Still lift to that music.
Dialogue during some scenes where it would just be wind blowing.
        Vegeta's embellished speeches.
Chris Sabat's transition of Vegeta's vocie from Drummond's delivery to a a less psychotic version, it used to develop with the character unlike other iterations and redubbing of the series where Sabat does the same voice throughout.
    • Dislikes:
      • Certain script changes: "Ally to good...," "I am mighty and you are not"
Faulconer score for filler, it just sounds like hey here's some lame music for a lame scene.
"You might think you know everything there is to know about me, but really, you're not even CLOSE."

"Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." ~ Sir Winston Chruchill / Dragon Ball Z in a nutshell
