What do the creators think?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

How much do you think Steven Spielberg has commented on the Japanese dub of Jurassic Park? I doubt he even knows more about it than "I guess there is one now that you mention it". It's the same with anyone involved with Dragonball's creation. What reason do they have to care?
Except that there ARE anime directors who work with the English dub and supervise much of it. For instance, Tomino approved the voice actors for the dub of Mobile Suit Gundam and even had an episode removed because he didn't feel it was up to snuff. I believe the FLCL director supervised the casting choices for that dub as well. And the Miyazaki example already posted.

Granted Dragon Ball wasn't given that treatment, but it's certainly not unheard of for anime directors/companies to take a vested interest in the English speaking market to make sure their work is represented well.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. English is the most widely known language in the western world. It's different from other languages in that it's universal. Also, the English dub of DB seems to be the one most Swedes here flock to, as well, since there is no Swedish version of it. Although, some of them are so horribly misinformed. They just find the old videos online (the Ocean/Original Funi Dub) and think the English dub is censored. I keep having to tell people here that it was redone later. Either way, I'd imagine that'd be the case in many other countries too, perhaps.

It's rare enough to assume the answer is "no" unless you no the opposite is true.
Disney pays a lot of attention to how their theatrical cartoons are dubbed into foreign languages, that doesn't mean your average American movie producer sits there and watches the Spanish dubbers like hawks to make sure they do shit right.

No one over the age of 6 would give a shit about a Swedish dub even if there was one. If they "flock to" the English dub it's because that's what they stumble over when Google searching. The original is pretty hard to find.

Hmm, I suppose that makes sense. Ok, so now I wonder "what would the creators think"?

Toriyama would not care less. Takao Koyama might be offended, based on the few comments from him out there.

qjz123 wrote:Well on the American side both Schemmel and Sabat have expressed their disdain and embarrassment of the original DBZ dub. On the Japanese side I recall Nozawa being asked about the english dub at the east meets west panel she said that "there's something universal about voice acting even though I don't speak english I can tell the acting is good" (something along those lines I'm having trouble remembering I'll try to find the video to check) now although Nozawa said this for all we know she was just trying to be nice not because she didn't like the dub but because she hasn't really seen it. I don't know if anyone else has commented on it, I honestly doubt Toriyama gives a rats ass same with Toei.
I seen that video, its the same one where Sean evaded all fan references to the abridged series in respect to the japanese side. Though I can guess the japanese side was just being polite and granted they don't speak english too well they cant really make any disections. They assumed it was good enough for its audience, though I doubt AT, ever watched it - he probably didnt have any real reason to even embrace it.

I actually wonder what they think of the English Music Score though. Thats something they can have a more objective opnion on. Do they like any soundtracks from it? Are they fine with the fact the dub changed it?
Zephyr wrote:The fandom's collective fetishizing of "moments" is also ridiculous to me. No, not everyone needs a fucking "shine" moment. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Yeah, the music opinion from the creators is something I'd wonder about. As I said, though, Shunsuke Kikuchi isn't exactly the most public of people. Not sure about Tokunaga, though. It'd be interesting to see his reaction to Menza's work. (I actually liked it, but I know many other people HATED it)
