I can't really fathom how people can't put Gohan in the top three.

This character is popular for all the wrong reasons. Maybe Gohan in his current incarnation can be fun, but as a child, and really the bulk of his screentime, he's a mild-mannered bore.

You're the free to find him boring for all the right reasons, but Gohan was literally the third most popular character of all Dragon Ball and not that far off for "most important in the series". Goku-Vegeta-Gohan as "top three Dragon Ball Z" characters, objectively speaking, is the only thing that makes actual sense.

Personal preferences are a whole 'nother thing.

Gohan was not relevant, or present for that matter, for half the series. Someone like Kuririn was and continued to be far more important.

In what, Dragon Ball Z?
In Z Krillin can be switched out for someone else fairly easily.

Vegeta Saga? Actually it's even better if he's not there, since Vegeta needs to survive to fight Frieza and Krillin's greatest accomplishment is surviving.
Namek? He is important for the Dragon Balls. You can still switch him for Yajirobei - who is about 1/2 of Krillin's power - make the guy learn bukūjutsu and that's it; and since Freeza would have killed Gohan before Goku I suppose Goku would've most likely trigged Super Saiyan anyway.
Everything after? Nothing, Krillin may as well not be even there. Possibly it would mean #18 has to die and that's it.

Take Gohan out and the series ends at Cell with everyone killed. No way, it ends with Raditz killing Goku and Piccolo.

In Dragon Ball? Well, he is important to the series, but not relevant in any way. Everything important is done by Goku, his training and trainers.
