Why that movie in particular? I mean, you would think they would go for the first Z movie to dub, but no. It's the random 3rd movie out of the original 13... It's just so random.

It's not uncommon that an anime receives multiple dubs in the same language. One good non-DB example is Lupin III's "Mystery of Mamo" movie where there are a total of 4 different English dubs spread out over a 25 year period.

Highly recommend buying the release in the link if you're a dub collector or are fascinated with stuff like this. Makes me wish something that like was possible for DB material seeing as we have all of these multiple English dubs lying around, some of which have never seen an official release before (Big Green 10 - 13, GT special and DB movies).

Toei did an english db dub? That's news to me.

That's the one distributed by Speedy in Malaysia. Toei Animation Enterprises is, I think, Toei Animation's branch for handling their shows in Asia outside Japan.

Yeah, the scripts were did for them until I know.


But the strange point, is that in the 9th movie the speedy dub used the cantonese dub that has some adaptations of the names for the chinese reading, like "Piccolo" = "Mor tung" = "Uncle Motong", for example.

If Toei was behind the Speedy dubs, I wonder if the dialogue we heard in those dubs is the infamous (and rarely-read) "Toei Translation," also known as the English translations of the scripts provided by Toei. Supposedly they were absolutely terrible (one of the lines is in my sig).

Very likely. Tho, Toei seems to be where we got all the dub names from. The names below are from the episode titles (17~36) that Toei gave FUNi. I don't know what names were used in the Malaysian English dub, tho.

It probably was. The dialog in the Speedy dub sounded similar.

Watching a Dragon Ball dub on Animax Asia was my first exposure to the series, but I don't remember much about it, like the voices or script. It must have been good though, because I got hooked on the series by watching it.

Depended on the movie, but I know in the Speedy dub of movie 4 Shenlong was "Shenron", Kuririn was "Kurilin," Bulma was "Buruma," and Yajirobē was "Yajaraki," although he had his proper name in the movie 5 dub.

Sometimes we got really weird stuff like Videl saying "I am called Kami."

Also, Tullece was called Tarés in the Speedy dub, which of course is different from the "Turles" name used in some of the other dubs.

Given how widespread the spelling is in international dubs, I'm fairly confident in saying that the Toei scripts for DB used 'Chaoz'.
