Are Power Levels really a "Big Joke"

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

To power-gaugers credit, no opinion on the usefulness of these numbers changes that their introduction was a Pandora's Box of potential quantification, and I think there is some fun to be had in tackling the series like something of a puzzle using the one methodical approach we are given toward how the otherwise incalculable, nebulous, ever-increasing-stockpile-of-infinite-health called ki works. That speculation just so happens to be doomed to fall flat every time because Toriyama rarely writes his story to comfortably fit that logic, and that as Herms said, numbers do not tell us anything new.
No, but neither does regular expression on a consistent basis. I mean, even if you track character strength based purely on narrative implication, without even trying to quantify power using figures, you're going to run into headaches. See Piccolo and Shisami in the latest film for example, which, I guess, is the sort of logistical issue that one may generate as an author when ones approach to scripting is to 'idly dash' something off. Ad-hoc in-universe logic is its own undoing.

Toriyama is an enigma in a league of his own. To me, he's the frustrating, infuriating sort of authorly-figure who segues between plucking pearls of sagely insight from his own created worlds and bumbling through them ditzily leaving a path of destruction in his wake like Mr. Magoo. He's also got a mischievous side a mile wide, whereby he's happy to play on his reputation, and lead people to believe that he either knows everything or nothing at all.

That's the best description of Toriyama I've ever heard.

Now put away the calculator and enjoy the rest of my drawings."

In that sense yes they are useless BUT I personally think power levels can be used to show someone's strength, speed, and durability.
