And besides, if they find living creatures on it at any point than we can hear CNN referring to them as "Namekian lifeforms." How awesome would that be?

Eh, why not! Certainly would be easier to remember than "Kepler 22-b."

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

This is one the greatest petitions I've ever come across. I signed the petition too, so I hope it comes to fruition, because having a planet in our galaxy named Namek would be fucking awesome. Dragon Ball fans would be able to boast about this forever if it happened.

Don't be so pretentious its just a fun little petition.Understanding ourselves is the first thing discussion should cultivate. If we can't understand ourselves, how can we express ourselves?
It's up to 27,500 already, it's going pretty quick.

Maybe VegettoEX could use his influence to get more petition signers or to get this more out there to the DBZ fanbase, eh?

Well, that was kinda deep. You are disappointed because you wanted to call it JulieYBM, don't ya?!JulieYBM wrote: Understanding ourselves is the first thing discussion should cultivate. If we can't understand ourselves, how can we express ourselves?
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Re: Petition: Changing the planet name of Kepler 22-b to "Na
For those who think this is a silly idea and that planets shouldn’t be named after things in pop culture, I just want to mention that Kepler-16b is sometimes called “Tatooine” because it was one the first extrasolar planets discovered in a binary star system. It wasn’t something named by a petition, but the actual astronomers.
A lot of scientists just happen to be science fiction fanatics (or huge geeks in general) on the side. Most of the ones I know under the age of around 50 have some sort of affinity for it. I do undergraduate research under someone who reads books to vote on the Hugo Awards and one of his colleagues has a “Trouble with Tribbles” poster in his office, just as examples. It’s not Dragon Ball, but most scientists are also a bit older because of how much time education it really takes to get anywhere, and thus more familiar with older pop culture.
Giving a planet an informal nickname isn’t that big an issue and there are probably more astronomers than you think who’d at least be amused by the notion. It’s not like its formal designation would disappear or anything either.

I think having a planet where the conditions for life exist named after an influential astronomer is better than having a planet named after some fictional planet.buutenks wrote:beats keppler whatever it was named.

Why? That's as lame as naming hurricanes after people.Doctor. wrote:I think having a planet where the conditions for life exist named after an influential astronomer is better than having a planet named after some fictional planet.buutenks wrote:beats keppler whatever it was named.

I think it's pretty cool to change it to Namek, It's better than numbers IMO. If that happens all they need to do is find a world similar to One Piece and name it's sea the Grand Line.

Addittionaly though most of the geographical features on Pluto are named after pop culture which stands in stark contrast with Mars, Venus and etc. which have completely mythological nomenclature for their features.Kiyza wrote:For those who think this is a silly idea and that planets shouldn’t be named after things in pop culture, I just want to mention that Kepler-16b is sometimes called “Tatooine” because it was one the first extrasolar planets discovered in a binary star system. It's never going to happen but let them try.JulieYBM wrote:Why should a real planet be named after a planet from some dumb comic? To tie it back to the comic? Why do that?
Two years ago, a similar petition was made to name a planet "Gallifrey", a reference to Doctor Who. The petition had 100k signatures but never got it's goal.
https://www.change.org/p/international- ... ifreyfound
NASA would never give a planet like that such a silly name. Sure, DBZ is cool but no one at NASA is going to advocate for this. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't see NASA naming a lot of planets based on pop culture references.
If this was 1995, I might have seen this happening, but it's long past DBZ's hayday. The series is still going strong but I can't see this name change happening. Chances are the majority of the people working at NASA aren't going to jump on board with this. They're going to find it childish and unwarranted. It's been done before and failed. If you think this time will be any different, tell it to the other petitions that tried similar things. By two weeks, the signatures will have died out and everyone will move on to the next thing.
Sorry, but this just won't happen.
