Re: Why is Broly popular?
And even for people who haven't seen the movies (because, let's be honest, how many people actually went out and watched all of them?) the video games did a pretty good job at making him stand out from all the other movie villains. One, he's huge compared to every other character. Two, he's in almost every game. Three, they always make him look powerful.
For people who liked him from the movies, I don't think it would really matter. But if someone just played the videogames and hadn't seen any of the movies, they'd assume Broly was some kind of final villain in the actual series. I think that's where a lot of Broly fans originally came from, especially here.

I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.

Re: Why is Broly popular?
My frustration with Broli's popularity has a lot to do with the relationship between the character and the video games. There seems to be this unwritten rule that, Broli (and Bardock to some extent, but quite to that degree) must be in every single Dragon Ball video game release (including one that doesn't otherwise include movie characters or even extend beyond the end of the Saiyan arc). Not only that, but be god-tier. In Xenoverse, he's the final boss... after Beerus for chrissake. He's on a lot of advertisements and game covers. It's like, you'll see promos with Freeza, Cell, Buu... and Broli.
I know I've harped on this a bit in the past, but it's still pretty annoying because I find him to be exceedingly stale at this point, and it's been that way for over a decade. He was actually a pretty cool novelty in Budokai 3, but good lord.

When you can put every character or nearly every character in the games, why wouldn't you put in Broly?

Re: Why is Broly popular?
probably because he's the "Legendary" Super Saiyan, he embodies what the Super Saiyan Legend describes and he wrecks everyone's S**t until the Toei Punch and the Son Family Kamehameha.
I used to really like him as a kid too. Mostly because I didn't know Dragonball Z movies existed, noone I knew knew they existed and they were almost Secret and Dark and I'd spend like a week downloading the movie in terrible quality with terrible subs off of Kazaa, they were Special, Violent, Awesome and Japanese, he's the Freaking LEGENDARY SUPER SAIYAN!!!
But now the Hype is gone, The movies are no longer special and now I'm older and can de-construct his character, he's just kinda lame. I guess he's probably just a character you grow out of, but there are a lot more kids watching that know he exists now, be it from Video games or just grabbing the movie online, then there is Dragonball Heroes hyping him up even more. so of course he's popular.
that's just what I think anyway.

Well, yeah. He's a superficial, shallow, one dimensional character.ABED wrote:He's popular because he's superficial? That is in effect what you're saying. He's basically an amalgamation of all the superficial tropes in regards to Dragon Ball
Spoiler:
Re: Why is Broly popular?
Which works fine for what he was made for. Its not like any of the other movie villians really had a lot going on. Plus Broly wasn't the brains of the operation, Paragus was.Lord Beerus wrote:Well, yeah. He's a superficial, shallow, one dimensional character.ABED wrote:He's popular because he's superficial? So basically people like him because his negatives didn't really have time to matter much. Now if he had been the main bad guy in a ~60 episode arc with no changes done to him then maybe he wouldn't.
I will say that it would of been nice if they had actually planned out the 3 movies in advance though. Probably could of made the set as a whole better if they did. But if you look at just movie 8 I think he works fine compared to the other movie villians.

Not the point I was getting at. You are in effect saying that Broly's popularity is BECAUSE he's shallow.Lord Beerus wrote:Well, yeah. Taopaipai, Piccolo Daimao, Freeza, and Cell were all scarier IMO.SaiyaSith wrote:"Why is Broly popular?"
Because he's the most scary and menacing villain in Dragon Ball. They designed him to look the biggest and strongest so of course he's going to be popular. If they rewrote his character with more inteligence he would actually be cool.

But that guy said Broly is the scariest, when he clearly isn't. He's just overhyped piece of shit character with a lot of muscles. He's a generic movie villain, no different than Super 13 or Bojack.ABED wrote:Just because some characters are scarrier doesn't mean another character isn't.Polyphase Avatron wrote:Taopaipai, Piccolo Daimao, Freeza, and Cell were all scarier IMO.SaiyaSith wrote:"Why is Broly popular?"

He's not generic, he stands out. Even if it's just his design, he clearly stands out from the bulk of them, especially the redneck super 13.

He's not generic, his look stands out from the pack. Considering how much he's singled out by people, I don't know how you honestly argue that he doesn't have a unique look. Garlic Jr and Dr Uiro are better movie villains and have better movies.
Let's not forget Cooler, even he is you know what than Broly.
Janemba and Hirudegarn are awesome and unique as well.

Maybe on Garlic, no on Dr. Uiro. Uiro's plan never made sense to me. He wants the body of the strongest even though he thinks he's stronger?Kuririn Fan wrote:Garlic Jr and Dr Uiro are better movie villains and have better movies.

Cooler is just a less effeminate Freeza. Janemba's first form is fun, but his second isn't interesting, and Hirudegarn is just a giant monster. Regardless, Broly's design does stand out.

Re: Why is Broly popular?
Whether you like the look or not, it stands out, and a lot of people single him out DBZ's many characters. And if he's just a copy of one other character, that doesn't make him generic. Trunks stands out as well, though I don't agree that he looks just like Trunks.Kuririn Fan wrote:He's just a copy of Grade 3 Trunks, movies are just copies of manga/anime arcs.ABED wrote:Maybe on Garlic, no on Dr. Uiro.
