How did the Japanese first react to Goku's Super Saiyan?

Well on the DVDs, Rock the Dragon continued to be used for the in-house-cast episodes up until the end of the Freeza arc. But on Toonami, I believe they mostly just used their own Toonami openings (even for the first 53 Ocean-cast episodes) after which they'd show the recap & title card. I remember seeing the Rock the Dragon opening only on special occasions, like if they were showing one of the first 3 movies. But that's just the US. I think the UK version may have been different (and they even had a second, more cheesy, version of Rock the Dragon that played in the later episodes).
