Re: This franchise has become a joke now
Different times, different demographic, and a much different personal outlook. I can only speak for myself on this, so if it doesn't capture your general emotion, then I apologize.
I think that a lot of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z pulls on your heart-strings being nostalgic. I am also nostalgic about the series. I enjoyed the series when I was really young and it made me feel a certain way and brings me back to a certain point in my life whenever I watch it. Super Saiyan was the first transformation, but certainly not the last. While I too question the creativity in recoloring the Super Saiyan form twice now, it's not like the twists and turns in DBZ were necessarily better than in Super. Now, I don't watch Super, but I know some things about it. The new characters that are introduced and Black and all that, that doesn't sound any worse than Z. The thing is that you've grown up and Super doesn't elicit the nostalgic feelings that you have for Z (at least that's how it works for me) because at the end of the day, it's a children's show that exists to get a good rating (which it does) and isn't really there to seek out the older fans and pull them back in. It kind of sold itself to the older fans just by being Dragon Ball (evidenced by how many of the older fans watch it) and is really there to create a whole new fan-base for the series.
Let me tell you how I'm going to watch Super: I'm just going to sit back, relax, and take it as it is. I know that I cannot take it too seriously because it doesn't take itself seriously. And let's get something straight too: it can never measure up to DBZ, so try to detach how you feel about Z and just take Super as its own thing. If you constantly hold it up to Z, I don't think you'll enjoy much of anything new. Just because The Batman wasn't as epic as Batman The Animated Series doesn't mean that it was a bad show; it just means that it was different, but not unenjoyable.

Re: This franchise has become a joke now
I disagree. BOG was a masterpiece like no other before it imo. Why?
Villian: Neutral. How often do we see a neutral villian in the series? Not just that, literally everything about Beerus is unique. Design, the fact that he's a god, and he's a student. Just wonderful. Not only that, but he ends up winning in the end and he "keeps" his promise in a kind way!
Action: Wonderfully animated and goes across a variety of different places. We have a forest, we have a rocky place, we have space, a party, kaios place.
World building: We learnt about multiple universes which really opened up the world.
Mystery: You might complain about ssg but it was quite interesting to figure out who we thought it would be and how it would be obtained? What types of people were in these universes?
Character moments: We see Vegeta's character developments. Willing to humiliate himself to save his family, Goku's anger at the borrowed power, Gohan has a kid (the way it was revealed was remarkably well done), everyone gets to at least attempt a fight.
Rof on the other hand wasn't so great. It's greatest accomplishments were the new outfits, introduction of whis training them, and the fights. I didn't like the direction it took Gohan's character but we still ended up seeing some of Vegeta's development. The fact he wasn't laughing at Freeza's face and was calm the entire time shows how much he changed.
Champa arc: Goku and Vegeta get sucked to heaven and back in this one. There's somethings that could have been changed like Piccolo winning and Boo fighting that would have made it more interesting but it did have it's moments. Hit was a great character and had a great fight, cabbe showed Vegeta's change even more, and champa and Vados, Monaka tricked everyone, and Champa and Vados were great characters.
Future trunks arc: I think this arc is amazing also.
Action: This arc is probably the best animated so far. And Trunks vs.Black was one of my favorite fights in the series.
World building: We learn more about the gods and how they operate
Mystery: Who the hell is black? Is Zamasu related to him at all? We have no clue what's going to happen.
Character moments: Vegeta's speech to Trunks is amazing and honestly should be told to Gohan too. Vegeta telling Trunks everything would be okay is a powerful moment. Goku bringing bulma to watch was a nice touch. Trunks' motivation and PTSD is interesting. Gohan being a motivation for Trunks was great. It actually made someone from the Pilaf gang, future mai, an interesting character.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.

I suppose that when your characters can fly and destroy planets you kind of lose any interesting battlegrounds that aren't just a different sky or ground.kinisking wrote:That's trueKanassa wrote:Huh, I just realised that Z really seemed to love Wastelands...kinisking wrote: Action: Wonderfully animated and goes across a variety of different places. ) Goku become stupid, to point of being retard (Sorry if i offend someone) Fans are doing much better job with series, i love DBZ Abridged, and i hope Malik will return with his awesome New Age, and we will get new GTR chapter from Kaboom

Abridged isn't the series! Abridged is inherently a parody that exaggerates certain characteristics, but it does it better than Super?coola wrote:I also stopped watching this series, mostly because oalomst everyone regressed since Buu Saga, Chi Chi is back to being annoying obsessive soccer mom (Her death was my favorite moment in Super F saga) Goku become stupid, to point of being retard (Sorry if i offend someone) Fans are doing much better job with series, i love DBZ Abridged, and i hope Malik will return with his awesome New Age, and we will get new GTR chapter from Kaboom

Re: This franchise has become a joke now
Of course the original Dragonball and Z are much better than Super thus far, not many deny that. But why harp on something you can't change?
This is a new era man. A new era of a different Dragonball. Do us longtime fans have to adapt? Yes. Would I prefer Dragonball Z? Of course! But those days are over.
Do I like this new Super Saiyan Rose stuff? I don't like the idea because I agree with you that these transformations are getting pretty ridiculous, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the other aspects of the show.
If you don't enjoy then don't watch, its that simple.

For me, yes, i wil take orst DBZ Abridged episode, over best Super episode, i know creators don't really like comparing with original seires, but that's my humble opinionABED wrote:Abridged isn't the series! Abridged over Super any day of the week. I actually laugh there, unlike Super's constant same old gags of Goku challenging strong guys to a duel and the Pilaf shenanigans.coola wrote:For me, yes, i wil take orst DBZ Abridged episode, over best Super episode, i know creators don't really like comparing with original seires, but that's my humble opinionABED wrote:Abridged isn't the series! I enjoy Super for other reasons outside of humor. I'm just thankful we are watching an official series developed by Toriyama himself, something I never thought would happen as little as 2 years ago.

Re: This franchise has become a joke now
Super has been getting a lot of hate around here. Some of it is valid, but most of it are just guys that are nostalgic and want the glorious days of Toonami to return. I'm responsible for some of that myself, until I changed my mentality and got rid of my nostalgic stubbornness.Anime Kitten wrote:Thank you. Super is catering to a completely different demographic, and not the old time fans that have followed this series since the original Dragonball. People don't like change, its just human nature, and it takes them a while to accept it.

Re: This franchise has become a joke now
Why? I can't understand it at all. It's super cheap, it's not clever, or remotely funny, but people just love it. I guess I just chalk it up to an unexplainable phenomena like why Barb from Stranger Things is so loved by a portion of the internet. Abridged is a parody and a cheap one at that. My big wish is that people would stop acting like it's anything more than what it is, a fanmade parody. It's not Dragon Ball, it's not a dub, it's a fanmade parody, and that's all.I'd take Abridged over even Z itself.

Yes, the first two episodes and numerous clips over the years. None of them were good. That's not hyperbole, not a single one was good.Anime Kitten wrote:How do you know that? Have you watched it?ABED wrote:It's super cheap, it's not clever, or remotely funny, but people just love it.

Re: This franchise has become a joke now
Well, if I were you, I'd chalk it up to people having different opinions than you, in this particular case, in humor. I've never seen it myself, and I don't like the overuse of jokes from it. But I won't stop people from liking it.ABED wrote:Yes, the first two episodes and numerous clips over the years. None of them were good. That's not hyperbole, not a single one was good.
But I definitely don't see any reason to like it more than the original work. It's a parody of the original work; it doesn't make any sense to me to prefer it over the original, unless you didn't like the original.

I know people have different opinions, but this is something I've never seen before. There's a constant insistence on putting up next to Dragon Ball which I find obnoxious. We do agree on the last point.

It being a parody doesn't mean it can't be more entertaining then the work it is parodying.Anime Kitten wrote:

In this case, it's not. Some of its fans act like it is literally an abridgment of the source material.Kanassa wrote:It being a parody doesn't mean it can't be more entertaining then the work it is parodying.Anime Kitten wrote:

Anyway, I wouldn't call the franchise a joke now, but just one that's long in the tooth.
