Will we get a canon explanation as to why Saiyan kids are stronger than their parents?

I don't think there is a valid explanation apart from the fact that Gohan and Trunks and Gotenks were meant to be stronger than their dads, but their dads were simply more popular than them. It's not really fair, but there it is.
