Who gets sick of the DBZ hating by anime fans?

That hypocrisy is one of the reasons I don't consider myself an otaku, though I love manga and anime and am in the fandom in general.
I can NOT count the number of times I've been in a discussion where some people would flip shit if you mentioned "Card Captors," instantly correct the offending party, and go on and on and on about how horrible the dub was, how much content was changed or removed, and how one shouldn't judge an anime on a bad dub. Then I mention DB.
DISMISSED.
These same people then go on about how horrid DBZ is, how the story is tright and unispired, the characters and dialogue one-dimensional, and the music is ridiculous and cheesy.
Oh, and if you think these opinions were based on fansub aquisitions or DVD purchases, you have another thing coming. When asked for more insight into why they thought this, it always came back to Toonami afternoon-viewing.
Oh, and no Naruto fan has a right to complain about Dragon Ball filler

To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Something that amuses me, these "hardcore anime fans" (I swear to god that word should only belong to porn and nowhere else, because it just never works out) have never heard of legends such as Go Nagai's works, watch tons of terrible mainstream anime and think something with muslce-pumped men with golden hair is Power Rangers on cocaine (mind you that'd be worth seeing). Meh, they just hate it because, let's face it, it has been milked past it's prime. If a Dragon Ball games doesn't appear on the PS3, then we can officially declare that nobody is milking it anymore. Plus, it's usually a hell of a lot more successful than the stuff they like.
And I'm a guy who is not really crazy about anime.

Hell, I hate all anime. I've offically become disgusted with it within the past few months (given Dragonball, Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo and a couple others the exception)
I mean, Dragonball is just entertainment. Yes, it's fun to pick things apart if you like them. I do it with anything I like out of habit. But... it's really nothing besides entertainment. The same for anime.

Just remember, everytime something bad is happening to you. Something even worse is happening to someone else.

If the critics of DragonBall actually watch/read DragonBall and base their opinion on what they watched/read , then I'm not bothered by what they think. Afterall, everyone is intitled to their opinion. It's the people who bash the series without even watching the anime or reading the manga that really annoy me. Those people are just drones that go along with the crowd because their afraid that if they express an opinion that goes against what the group thinks, they will then be singled out.
It is impossible to improve upon perfection.

The people who do this clearly have no respect at all.....I happen to have seen a lot of One Piece fans bash DBZ & call it crap, when the God of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda sees Toriyama as his hero.
I guess the problem is that it's so big that people simply want to hate it & compare it to the other big name Anime on the market now, like Naruto.

Well I suppose I'm in the unique position to not know anyone who even has the faintest idea of what anime is.
Of course there are people that have seen Dragon Ball or other similar shows but it is all the same to them and wonder if I'm not too old for that kind of stuf, they often are surprised it isn't an American show or that it already exists for 20 years.
For now to me Dragon Ball is the best show ever thought off only being rivaled by Naruto and maybe Bleach with each having its own strong moments and weaknesses, but even a show like Hikaru no Go seems to use something from Dragon Ball, so it probably is the formula I'm attracted to.

Like someone I don't think I should mention by name on this site said a couple years ago:
"DBZ isn't my favorite anime, not by a long shot, but I enjoy it".
DBZ stopped being my favorite anime a few years ago (Rurouni Kenshin now holds that title though the manga is way better). I acknowledge the show's faults but still enjoy it anyway. I also get annoyed when people act elitist towards DBZ and people that like it and act like deep people watch only anime like Cowboy Bebop (serious and complex) and only little kids and anime n00bs watch DBZ (the DBZ is a "gateway anime" statement).

Firstly you have to accept that every person has their own opinion on what they think of anything. So when I see people badmouthing DBZ, it doesn't phaze me, they can think what ever they want, it doesn't affect my opinion on the show. However.
I do despise people who judge someone because of watching DBZ.
I had an DBZ avatar on another non-anime forum and I was arguing on a matter and the person said 'anyone who is a fan of DBZ doesn't know what they are talking about and their views shouldn't even be considered'.
Now that really pissed me off, DBZ had nothing to do with the argument (the subject of it is irrelivant, it's the point I'm making), but just because I had a Goku in my avatar that automatically makes me an unknowledged person?
You see, it's fair enough if somebody doesn't like the show and says things like 'DBZ is gay it's the crapest thing to ever be made' or 'it's a kiddy show, the creator is dumb blah blah blah', let them ramble on as much as they want, but when they judge people who watch the show and label them 'ignorant' or 'foolish' for watching it, it get's on my nerves.
Of course, the forum was a GTA forum, so you could expect the type's of users there, but I am not embarrased to say 'I like DBZ', when I went to college the people there were rough people who came from all sides of London, some of the worst places to live, and a lot of them say how DBZ is one of them sick cartoons that they all used to watch and still think it's a great anime, and they love playing the PS2 games too.
People who downgrade the show are people that are clearly self obbsessed with what other people will think of them if they allow themselves to watch it, so they steer clear form it and act proud as if they are manly. Fuck them.

If someone has watched a significant amount of episodes and still dosen't like DB/DBZ/DBGT, thats fine with me, but if they have not, and go around bashing the show that makes me mad.
I totally agree with Bejita on the matter of treating people bad because they like a show or activity. It happens all the time at my school and I hate it more than anythng to see it happen.

The Dragonball series is bashed a lot, and it dosen't get any respect in the stores near me or on t.v. but there isn;t much to do about it exept remember what the show/manga means to you and that you still like it.

Oh man! I hear you bro!Vhanos wrote:This was done before but the thread for it is old and I'm doing a new one. I want to discuss this with other fellow posters here. Because I want to share the thought that others may have.
I'm so disgusted of the hating for DBZ gets by anime fans. Treating the show like its such an abomination. It's so annoying. Just makes me want to say how reality isn't sweet sometimes. I have been on countless sites and forums and have seen so many hate throughout the years. It's incredible to an incalcuable height. DBZ (along with the original DB) is and has always been my favorite anime out of all the stuff I've seen (watched a lot). To see the hate it gets by many (but doesn't mean majority) anime fans is just plain crap. There are people who don't even give it a little respect which makes it repulsive.
Where does most of the hate come from? The show is probably the most famous anime that people know. There goes a saying, when you're on top there's envy, people will hate you when you're successful. Sure there are things about the show that people find a disliking to but it seems to me that some people who hate on it are just on to something. Yes not everyone will like it because it didn't have anything for them. But some people are straight hating it. It looks to me that people are hating on DBZ because it threatens the existance of their favorite animes or something like that.
It strikes me funny that whenever there is an anime that reminds someone of Dragon Ball they will go on to talk down on it. Most especially ones that were inspired by Toriyama's work. Now I was at one place where a bunch of Naruto fans were saying how Naruto has DBZ surpassed and saying some untrue things about DBZ. Then I was on a Bleach forum that had a DBZ thread where everyone was straight up showing no respect to DBZ and not giving much credit save for 2 or 3 people. No offense to those people I saw but DBZ has something that those two shows don't. I can point out qualities those two animes don't have too. Also They aren't doing too much influential things.
I'm just tired how people say that the show is for introducing people to anime and that you should watch newer ones and assume for you that they're better. That is one of the most annoying things that I see people do. It seems to get hated on by a vast amount of people in the anime community (but vast doesn't neccessarily mean majority). It's despicable.
Does anyone feel the same way about this?
Normally I don't let it bother me, but jeez sometimes it just gets to be too much.
And like THEIR animes are so much better

There is no better combination in the world than Dragonball, Cherry Pepsi, and Cheez-Its. It's a proven fact.

Very true. Now, this isn't something I see that much outside the community - but many DBZ fans complain about the inconsistencies and filler that contradicts with the manga. But it's very important to note that, compared to a lot of other popular series, DBZ is very true to the manga. People seem to complain about the smallest things being changed in DBZ, and no one complains about Akira.
Oh, and no Naruto fan has a right to complain about Dragon Ball filler

Anyways, on topic. I haven't really seen much of this anime fandom that seems to hate Dragon Ball, but still I hate this sort of predujuice. Yeah, the animation may be inferior to today's standards, but hey, it's a 15-year old show. Back then, it was golden stuff.
And of course, these guys have never seen Dragon Ball. Or at least the manga. Or tried watching a full story arc. They hated it just because of the huge fighting.
But hey, like Mr.Annoucer said, those idiot otaku don't seem to know that in Japan, it is crazy shit. Any anime you see have some sort of tribute to Dragon Ball in one way or another, and it might not have to be an anime!
Sadly, it's mainly people in the UK or USA, because these countries behold the people that are foreign fans to anime, people that are only aware of the dub in some cases, but even so, we all begun on the dub (well not ALL of us) so we can't really diss it, it's still DBZ, but people everywhere are biased and some can't accept the fact that some people like different things. If we get mad at these people who hurl abuse at us DBZ fans, what better are we to throw abuse back? Just let them be the fools.
If you go to places like Italy, South Africa, where people arn't so worried about watching a cartoon/anime because of their age, people are more laid back in foreign countries, it's just where we are that people love to take the mick. I know grown ups who still watch the show. And plus, apart from the old 80's style drawings, it's the DB story what is the true work of Toriyama that has been dubbed in the many languages for a fan base of near enough all ages.

The reason anime fans hate DBZ is simple.
Its a very popular show that gained mainstream popularity in America. Any other answer is wrong.
Oh their are the ones who say "That Dragonball is good, because it was funny." Odds are they have never seen any Dragonball episodes outside of the initial dub done in 1995.

I also have to agree with "Bejiita". It's one thing to bash the series, but its another to have some prejudice &/or simply ignore the fans. Quite frankly, it may have happened to me. There was this one time where I brought my Cell DVDs to my animation classroom. I put them in their original Japanese language w/ subtitles. I was the only one watching, while everyone was discussing some other matter. It even got to a point where one of them got up & decided to completely lower the volume to the point where you can bearly hear it. Its as if I was completely ignored.
