Yeah, it was a bunch of boring crap. No wonder Toriyama thought Gohan wasn't suited for the main character role.ABED wrote:It doesn't take 10 episodes to tell that story. Contrast that with the beginning of DBZ. We saw where Goku's life was and by the second episode, we were into the conflict. The Great Saiyaman stuff is far better in Kai and even then it's still too long. I just never cared much about the Great Saiyaman stuff. It wasn't funny to me.Just because there's no fights or adventures doesn't mean there isn't any story progression (although to be fair there is a high potential for that). You could make the argument that everything in the Buu arc before the Tournament isn't progressing the story, but we get to see where Gohan's life is after Cell, are introduced to Trunks and Goten and Videl, and learn how they think of each other

If they'd manage to make something like Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu then count me in. Most love the Driving episode, don't they. Now imagine 12 of those. But you'd have to have a skilled SOL/Comedy writer, find a way to involve as many of the cast as possible (Piccolo, Vegeta and Goku especially, due to the fish out of water scenario) and have it be reasonably well animated. FMP Fumoffu was a fun as it was because it also had great animation on it's side.

Actually, I wouldn't mind a Laff-A-Lympics style series with DB characters, which could also include Dr. Slump characters.

No. It wouldn't feel like Dragon Ball without fighting and adventures.TheBlackPaladin wrote:In watching Dragon Ball Super (and for that matter, even some scenes from the two new movies), I've come to really like the "slice of life" scenes/episodes of Dragon Ball...which is to say, scenes where the characters are just hanging out, doing every-day things, instead of being part of some big fight or intense story arc.
Now, of course, a show as combat-oriented as Dragon Ball is never going to get just a straight-up "slice of life" series where that's all that happened, and for several reasons, not the least of which is that Toei would never green-light it. Having said that...if such a series was green-lit, would you watch it?

I would. Dragon Ball is always a show about fighting and nothing will change that. So I wouldn't mind a short spin-off that focused on the aspect of the characters beyond throwing fisticuffs. It could make the characters even more relatable and down-to-earth.
Spoiler:
Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
It depends on who are getting these "slice of life" episodes and what they are doing:TheBlackPaladin wrote:Having said that...if such a series was green-lit, would you watch it?
• Goten, Trunks, Marron, Pan and Bra grown up.
• Trunks in his off day as a Time Patroller.
• Uub with Neko Majin and/or with Goten, Trunks and Pan.
• Vegeta visiting Universe 6's Sadala.
• Saiyans with Tsufurujins and later in their off day after Freeza showed up.
• Goku learning more techniques from Yadorat.
• Whis and Beerus; Champa and Vados.
• Angels when not serving their Gods of Destruction.
• Goten and Trunks with their sword school.
• Mr Satan acting.
• Tenshinhan with his dojo.
• Majins having fun with the not-blind-and-child-anymore kid (from Dragon Ball Z, the one Majin Buu cured) in their theme park.
• Gohan writing his book about Ki control.
These ones I would most definitely watch.

Wasn't Krillin and 18's wedding one of Toriyama's rejected BOG story ideas?
If so yeah, we need more episodes around events like this.

B-But it'd be so weird and just very out of place if there was no fighting at all.Lord Beerus wrote:I would. Dragon Ball is always a show about fighting and nothing will change that. Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
There still could be fighting now and then, but Super/main series would provide most of that.

Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
Hell no. The character's aren't deep enough and the majority of themes in Dragonball have been about overcoming the odds, digging deep down in the heat of battle to triumph over an enemy stronger than you, pushing yourself past your limits, etc. I'm under the impression that anybody who wants to see Vegeta cooking food every other episode are one of those weird Yaoi fans.
Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
Well that's rather close minded. Does such a show need to exists? No, of course not. Could it potentially break new ground in the franchise if done right? Absolutely.
Aslong as it's in character to the spirit of the characters, I see no harm.
I don't think anyone here is asking for the Teen Titans Go equivalent of DB, at least I'm not.

How does everyone define "slice of life"? Because unless there's conflict of some kind, it's not a story.

Depends on execution, but obviously there's story even in the most basic slice of life concepts.
Unless there has been some episodes of Super that felt like Seinfeld that I'm not aware of.

The slice of life episodes I'm hoping we eventually get are a Halloween episode and a Christmas episode. Toei's Precure gets both of those every year so it's not like Toei doesn't do holiday specials.
On hiatus.

I don't think this would work. Only a bit of it here and there like Super does is enough IMO. I wish they explore it a bit more, though.

Aren't those set in a our world technically? DB's alternative universe might pose a problem with that. I'm surprised we haven't had a beach episode yet.Chuquita wrote:The slice of life episodes I'm hoping we eventually get are a Halloween episode and a Christmas episode. Re: Would you watch a "slice of life" Dragon Ball series?
Well yeah, even "nothing" is something. No one grew or learned anything, but they were still slice of life-ish stories of sorts.
So yeah, I still think a side story series can work for DB.
