Wow. People have been into this show way longer than I have (i.e. 1988!!). But I have a question: do the people that get you into the show usually get out of it before you..?

The first thing I ever saw of Dragon Ball was the "Pikkoro-san daisuki" scene from one of the movies, and it was on one of the basic channels since I didn't have cable back then. I was 8 years old at the most, since this happened in the apartment I used to live in (and I moved before my 9th birthday.) My dad asked me if we were going to the Disney Store, or if I wanted to watch "Mr. Piccolo" all day.
After I moved, I was upset that I didn't have any friends school, and I remember catching the Goku & Piccolo vs. Garlic Junior fight at the end of Movie 1. When middle school started, I remember I woke up at 6 or 6:30 (something like that) to my tv alarm. (The television was set to turn on at that time, so I could go to school.) Luckily, I woke up to watch Dragon Ball Z, episode 1. (With commercial bumpers! ZOMG!) I would watch WB11 every morning until DBZ was replaced sometime by the Cosby Show.
I didn't know then, but I think it was taken off because the new season 3 episodes were soon going to air on CN.
From then on I'd watch it off of Cartoon Network. I'd watch Toonami everyday, catching other old favorites like Sailor Moon and Reboot. At the change of the season, near the end of my 6th grade school year, I remember watching 2 episodes a day at 5 and 5:30. You should have seen my dubbie-fangirly glee!
So, yeah, there's more, but that's just the start of it.

What's scarier than a DBZ H-game?

I was pretty young I think, 9 years old or something, when I first saw the tail end of a japanese episode of Dragonball Z on the international channel before one of my mom's j-dramas. This was during the fight with Radditz and I remember thinking it was very green (come to think of it a lot of early DBZ was really green wasn't it?). I was in the habit of watching pretty much any cartoons that happened to be in this slot so I ended up watching it every Sunday night. Though I was a faithful viewer I don't really remember being totally obsessed with it but I also began watching the dub at around the same time. I also had some tapes of the first Dragonball dub but all the space in between had me very confused.
My real obsession would not begin until my third trip to Japan when in the space of three weeks I bought and "read" volumes 1-17.

I think that, out of all the people on the forum (1300
), I'm the one who got into it at the youngest age. It was right when DBZ started airing over here, and I must have been just over the age that qualifies to be a toddler (this'd be... mid 90's?). I was watching Cartoon Network, and it was the old "a. k. a." segment (y'know... Spaceghost, anime, retro stuff...) and there was an advertisement for Dragon Ball Z. WTF.
Fast-forward about 2 days. I saw my first episode... the earliest I can remember is in the middle of Gohan's training where he punches a rock, sighs, turns away, and the rock cracks without him knowing. I laughed my ass off
; and then there was Goku down in "HFIL". >.>
I got into the manga through a friend in my 4th year of school. He had 1-6 of the old, larger Viz printings. So I borrowed them. Then I found a store a town away from where I lived and they had the new, smaller Shonen Jump printings. My friend got his books back a year later.
I remember ordering abot 20 volumes of DB manga off of Amazon not 3 years ago, and I've never looked back.
(still need to geet #42 though... ugh
)
JAPANESE VERSION 4EVAR!!!
Oh, and one more thing...

Aww, Congrats. I hope to go to Japan soon myself, being in my second year of Japanese & all. That last quote was pretty funny too cause I'm a bit of a TV addict myself.omae no kaasan wrote:10 years next month.
11 if you count when I watched Dragon Ball at a GOD-AWFUL early morning hour but didn't know what it was even though I loved what I saw of it before it went off the air.
And here I am 10 years later with a Japanese woman whom I love more than I can say and working in Japan.
All thanks to a cartoon ^O^

I originally saw episodes on CNX in the U.K. before it became Toonami.
I thought it looked cool, and remembered reading reviews in Gamesmaster magazine of the SNES Dragonball Z games, and also a trip to France where I remember seeing Dragonball action figures.
My younger brother and his friend got really into the show around this time, as did a friend of mine (who is now a Dragonball-worshipping medical Doctor of all things). Anyway, I started getting more and more into the show and all of a sudden, along comes the first Budokai game.
After many in-game battles and episodes, I am now into Dragonball more than anyone I know; even the younger brother who got me into Dragonball and his friend's fandom has waned.

Well, it all started when I was 10. I was walking through the supermarket at the mall and decided I'd buy a packet of crisps. I got one and threw it into the shopping cart. I noticed display box had a picture of a man with pointy black hair in blue spandex, on the front it read: Dragon Ball Z. When I got home, I found a round cap with a picture of 'Chi-Chi' inside the pack. I took this to school, and discovered that everyone was collecting these round caps, called 'Dizks'. Well, I decided to watch the show, and it all kinda took off from there.

The first time I heard of Dragonball I thought it was sort of like Pokemon but with Dragons coming out of capsules instead. Although I hated Pokemon, I decided to watch the first episode of DBZ (english version).
The first couple of DBZ episodes were really well done, even in the english version, so I was hooked. It just never gets old.
Dragonball rules.

Bit of a strange story for me.
It was 2000. A small TV station (Not YTV) was airing the first arc of early-dubbed Dragon Ball Z episodes. Somewhere around the age of 7, I watched the first couple of episodes and was instantly hooked. I just loved the fighting. That's all.
I managed to watch it somewhere until the end of the Vegeta/Saiyan arc, then stopped for a while. The station then took it off the air.
I somewhat lost contact with the Dragon World for the next few years, despite trying to learn as much as possible. Eventually, I got a huge dose of it. By Budokai.
Afterwards (I'm not too fond of this part), I began looking for the DVDs and VHS'. After finding very little of them, I started looking on the internet. Manged to find some high quality Cell arc episodes and started watching those. I then learned of the existence of Dragon Ball and GT
But then I gave up watching the episodes, and proceeded to get my fix from another source. It was about a year ago (maybe two) when I discovered the manga, and I loved it. At first, I thought that it was created AFTER the anime, until I learned that this was the ultimate shiznit.
And yeah, it was amazing. I discovered the Japanese edition a while ago by accidently attempting to activate the subtitles for GT on my PS2. Since then, I found some 'digisubs', watched some more of it, was hooked once more. Although now I have given up my illegit ways (I still sadly have a CD with all 42 'scanlated' manga volumes >.<), I am trying to be a good guy.
And that's my story.

I first got into DBZ when getting ready in the morning for school. I was in the third grade, and I saw Gohan, on a mountain eating apples. But I thought it was funny that every fight scene, the scene would go 5x faster. So thanks to channel 11.
I am neither Goku nor Vegeta!!

I started in 1995, watching DBZ alongside the Double Dragon cartoon (so, I was 10). I remembered being absolutely enamoured with the show, because it was like nothing I had ever seen before.
I didn't start with episode 1, I remember that much. I think...I must have started right at the beginning of the battle with Vegeta and Nappa, because my earliest memory is of Tenshinhan looking absolutely badassed.
And then, it just...dissapeared for a while, so I forgot about it. Until CN started showing it, and I became addicted to it like a lab monkey on heroin.

BACK IN 1996, I WAS (14) AT A FRIENDS HOUSE AND SAW THIS SHOW ON CARTOON NETWORK. I REMEMBER IT WAS UNLIKE ANY CARTOON I HAD EVEN SEEN BEFORE. I THINK THE FIRST EPISODE I EVER SAW WAS FROM THE BEGINING OF THE FRIEZA SAGA. I HAVE BEEN ADDICTED LIKE A DRUG INDUCED CHILD EVER SINCE. I HAVE BOUGHT EVERY SINGLE DRAGONBALL, Z, AND GT DVD RELEASED BY FUNIMATION. THIS ALSO SPAWNED A GREAT LOVE FOR ANIME. (ALTHOUGH WHEN I WAS A CHILD I WATCHED VOLTRON AND OTHER 80's CARTOONS) WHICH I FOUND OUT LATER IS ALSO JAPANESE ANIMATION. I KNOW OWN OVER 300 ANIME DVD's AND COUNTING. ADVISE: DONT LET YOUR CHILDREN WATCH CARTOONS THEY WILL BECOME ANIME CRAZED LUNATICS. JK
