Dragon Ball Z (Budokai) for PS2 and GCN was like a turning point for Dragon Ball fighting games. From what I hear, it is far superior to what came before it and they only got better from there.

I always say it's a lot better than what came before it but worse than what came after. Which is how it should be, really.

So Super Saiyan drains Goku more than Kaioken x20 did?
Indeed it does. =D

Pedro the hutt is right. That had so many powerups for Goku that it was almost impossible to stay SSJ1. Thank God they ended the game with the Cell Arc, eh? If they went into the Buu Arc and you wanted a custom SSJ3 Goku, you wouldn't have any space for moves. Seriously.

I think that's why they introduced ''Breakthrough''.

Well, the game was definitely a work in progress, which was pretty much perfected by B3, but when the latest game we had was Final Bout, it was a very nice breath of fresh air. For me, at least, it was the first game I had played with in-game transformations.

Hmm I guess not, I never used things like that anyways though. I liked to fight the good fight fairly. I know what you mean though.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

That said, in Budokai 2 sustaining SSJ3 can be a bit of a toughy, unless you use the Angel's Halo capsule, but then.. let's see... you'll have wasted five slots out of seven to reach and comfortably maintain the SSJ3 form, which leaves you with two capsules that you could use to, oh, stack the Kamehameha on, but that really, really hurts your attack diversity. Personally I prefer to equip the Z-sword, which gets me to SSJ level strength without any of the Ki-drain, Kaioken for if I ever need 5 additonal percents o' damaging power, and then meditation to halve the ki cost of all special moves, leaving me with four capsules for specials. Which is usually double kamehameha, Super Dragon Fist and alternatingly Genki Dama and Warp Kamehameha. (or either of those stacked)

True, true I enjoyed the first Budokai tremendously. However it is weak compared to the sequels and the Sparking! series. Though doesen't every Budokai-Sparking! game seem like a "work in progress" ? I mean they are always missing something. Characters, scene/map, technique isin't quite right, etc.

That's what I thought as well. Remember what Mike nitpicked about the original Sparking! back in the very first episode of the podcast? One of his complaints was that there should be more battles for the Movie 12 scenario instead of only one, in which Sparking! NEO had increased it to 11 battles. My point: We'll never be content with the games if we are always saying "There's always going to be missing 'whatever's." I'm one of those who has yet to try Super Dragon Ball Z but thinks that's going to be the DBZ game that I'll enjoy the most because it doesn't focus on quantity. Other than Spike's increased roster, everything's heading towards the wrong direction. Movesets fixed to characters (come on, SSJ Goku cannot use a normal Kamehameha anymore), lame potara level-up system, basically same combo for everybody. Unless they start from scratch, the expansion of the same system might get Spike some angry fans. I'm not biased though because I highly enjoy Sparking! NEO.

And about Budokai, it is not too crappy after playing Final Bout and Ultimate Battle 22. It IS crappy if you play it right after playing Budokai 3 though. Nowadays I only play that game just to look at the better-than-Sparking!-NEO-cutscenes, but not playing for fun (That's Budokai 3). :D

Well that's not always the case with fighting games. There are a lot of older fighting games which are still fun to play nowadays. The past Streetfighters, Fatal Fury's, heck the Butoden and Hypoer Dimension games are still fun despite their age.
True, they are still fun to play but lets face it, Graphics have gotten better over the years and sometimes we tend to judge games by the graphics.(that was not indended to be a steryotype for those that don't judge games that way  )

As prevalent as that is, there are way more games that, although they look horrible when compared to what's out now, we have very high respect for and will still play today. And Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony even have the ability to download these games into their new consoles.

Eh...I don't really know. At the time of it's release, I DID think Budokai was awesome. But, yes, looking back and thinking of other Dragonball games I've played, it's not all that great.
