What do you think of Goku in Toyotaro's Dragon Ball Super?

I think he should trade portraying Gokuu as a bad, uncaring dad in for portraying Gokuu as a loving husband and father whose second favorite thing to do in the world is spend time with his wife.

Leaning into the "Gokuu hates his son" bullshit is just so fucking tiring.

And grossly out of character. What's worse is no one on the editorial team/Toriyama cares enough to correct him.

It's more gap moe for Gokuu to be a good parent and spouse at this point, anyway. It'd be breaking the rules, because the what used to be 'rule breaking' is now the new rule.

Both the anime and manga version of Super seem to overplay his childish, quirky nature. There was a subtle maturity and sage-like wisdom to him in the Boo Saga and a lot of that was stripped away in order for him to go back to being the underdog/student.

I've always been on the fence about defending or arguing against his portrayal as a family man as I feel sometimes both sides go too far in whatever direction their respective position on the matter is but I will say that the jokes are definitely unnecessarily mean sometimes. And I sure did not like having Vegeta of all people make a comment about someone else's parental skills.

Of course both sides do sometimes go too far but the anime at least found a good balance with having Goku actually support and care for his family/friends. DBS manga Goku does none of that.
