Is stupid to use the term "canon"?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

It's never stupid to use a term, merely abuse it.

"Canon" has become such a controversial word in vocal minority groups for what's ultimately not that important beyond distinguishing what did and didn't happen in a specific story.

It's really just meant to label what is relevant and actually occurred in a particular storyline. For example, did the original DBZ movies happen in Toriyama's main story? Not really, ergo "non-canon". Did the original manga happen in his main story? Yes, ergo "canon".

It's as simple as that, but people make a big fuss over it because they attach positive/negative angles to the idea, when it's neutral as most things are.

Take it from me, folks. Use "canon" right. Only use it to figure out what parts of a story actually happened in a given version, nothing more. Don't use "canon/non-canon" as "good/bad".

I'm kinda sure that anyone did, but just in case I ask here. If you have something, show me some interviews about that. I need proofs to debunk a canon fag
No. There is a canon, Toriyama's Dragon Ball, not Toei's Super, Toyotaro's take is debatable, but much closer than Toei.

For instance, look at the Broly movie, that's definitely got the most of what we've seen from Toriyama.

Yes it is.

There are three different continuities of Dragon Ball Super and they all make tons of retcons to the Dragon Ball manga. The Dragon Ball manga is the only "true canon."

I see ALL of it, the Super anime, Super manga, the Toriyama movies, the Z movies, the specials, the OVA's, Dragon Ball Minus, and GT as expanded universe and each different continuities.

Does anyone care about what's canon in Lupin the Third? No. Dragon Ball should be the same way. This series is going to outlive its creator, its actors, and even us. We should just try to enjoy whatever stories we're given regardless of who they're made by.

I wouldn't only use “stupid”, but the use of the term “canon”, as any other term, in any discussion, is futile if not clearly defined.
What I consider canon is Toriyama's Dragon Ball, whatever that would be, and in absence of something tangible for that definition, next to that I consider just whatever is closest to it of the different continuities.

It's great if you and others can enjoy different continuities without problem, and I get that some people try to shove their canon; but don't you think trying to dictate that people shouldn't care about canon is just as trying to dictate that people should only care for what you consider canon?

Honestly, who cares?

Even in filler, movies, and GT, Akira Toriyama was still heavily involved. Maybe even more involved than George Lucas is in most of the Star Wars expanded universe. Involving himself with Gregory, Broly, Bojack, Tapion, the Grand Kai, Pikkon, Giru, Pan, Trunks, kid Goku.

Dragon Ball will become like like Lupin the Third. It's inevitable. There will be movies 30 years from now with Goku and his friends on a new adventure and fighting new bad guys, and they'll be awesome. It'll be stupid if people are just writing them off because they're "non-canon."

Sometimes I wonder how detailed these notes Toriyama gives Toyataro and Toei even are. If most of the stuff they think up is their own original material, isn't that filler, or non-canon?
