That's something that still shocks me to this day. I thought the story was slow-paced on the American "every 4pm after school" schedule, I couldn't imagine sitting through Namek on the original Japanese "once a week" schedule!Planetnamek wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:01 am Yeah i can understand people being frustrated back when this originally aired after waiting for months for new episodes only for it to be a filler arc. As someone that never watches TV shows before they finish airing the whole series anymore(well besides animated sitcoms anyways) I thankfully don't have to deal with getting blue balls waiting months for new episodes. I couldn't imagine watching an anime week to week in this day and age, I just wouldn't have the patience for it.

I can just visualize what this would've been like for viewers back in 1990 and well into 1991 at the time the Freeza arc was first airing, true that format is a standard for a lot of anime series both past and present though i'll bet there were likely a good few watching Z at the time who were sitting through bits like this and thinking "Come on, get on with it already." and if i was there then it would probably drive me absolutely nuts waiting week after week for a month or more for the story to pick up again.KBABZ wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:38 amThat's something that still shocks me to this day. I read the "Downfall of WCW" book and the authors talked about something similar there, like how if you think later WCW Nitro episodes are frustrating to watch now, imagine having to watch the same tiresome matches and storylines and mid-card wrestlers getting largely ignored week to week with no end in sight.SuperSaiyaManZ94 wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:46 amI can just visualize what this would've been like for viewers back in 1990 and well into 1991 at the time the Freeza arc was first airing, true that format is a standard for a lot of anime series both past and present though i'll bet there were likely a good few watching Z at the time who were sitting through bits like this and thinking "Come on, get on with it already." and if i was there then it would probably drive me absolutely nuts waiting week after week for a month or more for the story to pick up again.KBABZ wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:38 amThat's something that still shocks me to this day. So true, and given that this part of the series in particular is where they stuffed the most filler material in i can definitely imagine how tedious this would have been for some viewers in Japan at the time. Just having to go through a chunk of episodes loaded down with a butt load of extra bits and whole episodes i'll bet likely caused some pain for those watching because being stuck on the same storyline for months at a time week in and week out like Goku and Freeza's battle in the series would have you wishing for it to finally be over with.Planetnamek wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:56 amI read the "Downfall of WCW" book and the authors talked about something similar there, like how if you think later WCW Nitro episodes are frustrating to watch now, imagine having to watch the same tiresome matches and storylines and mid-card wrestlers getting largely ignored week to week with no end in sight.SuperSaiyaManZ94 wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:46 amI can just visualize what this would've been like for viewers back in 1990 and well into 1991 at the time the Freeza arc was first airing, true that format is a standard for a lot of anime series both past and present though i'll bet there were likely a good few watching Z at the time who were sitting through bits like this and thinking "Come on, get on with it already." and if i was there then it would probably drive me absolutely nuts waiting week after week for a month or more for the story to pick up again.KBABZ wrote: Mon Feb 01, 2021 12:38 am
