Ya know I actually rewatched it recently for the first time since I dont know when and it’s not that bad. I actually kind of prefer it to Tree of Might but we’ll get to that in two weeks.Matches Malone wrote: Wed Dec 23, 2020 10:00 amFinally, in 2 weeks we'll be able to discuss the citizen Kane of anime, Lord Slug.Robo4900 wrote: Wed Dec 23, 2020 9:57 amOfficially Z episodes 70-74 are next week. Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone. Luckily for us, Toriyama did the job for us years ago by giving us a jolly drawing of the DB gang getting in the holiday spirit. Hopefully you guys are getting into it too. Whatever your plans may be, I hope you stay safe and healthy out there. Here's to a better 2021.
Spoiler:
First time Dragon Ball fan as of March 2020. Still learning the ropes. Nothing much else to say,

I don't think things can any worse than they've been this year so 2021 by default will be a better year.

Joking aside, yes, I hope you all have a far better 2021!
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Agreed, even with all the changes DBZ still stood out big time next to most western-animated shows at the time, it was leaps and bounds ahead of a lot of saturday morning cartoons running at the time. At the time when I first laid eyes on it on CN i'd never seen anything that intense before.ArmenianPepsi wrote: Thu Dec 17, 2020 3:28 pm With how "Questionable" Season 3's quality is, it still goes to show the strength DB still has. Even when stuck with a terrible dub, with arguably worse writing than a lot of others children's shows at the time, and even worse than Saban's previous diluted scripts, something about it was still able to poke through it all and engross a generation of viewers.
Cynical as it may be, I think at that point the still great animation and action were the only things keeping the viewers glued to the screen. Because I myself can not imagine myself as a kid living back then being able to get sucked in by the story when the plot is being delivered by things like Sean's 3rd rate Kelamis impersonation, Linda Young's chain smoker Frieza, Sabat's copy cat Drummond Vegeta, or Sabat's try-hard "Badass" Piccolo. That's just me though so I'm probably just rambling
Seriously, those first episodes after the transition to the in-house cast sound like it was recorded in Funimation's parking lot.
Sure the early performances are rough, but it didn't stop me from getting sucked in as a kid. Back then I didn't really pay much attention to acting so if there was a bad performance I genuinely wouldn't notice(mostly due to my autism).
I'm one of those fans that honestly did not mind the punched up dialogue one bit, it honestly did make me laugh quite a bit, but I can totally get why some find it cringy.
It is interesting to think of what would've happened if Ocean had gotten to stay on, but honestly i'm glad things turned out the way they did.
And yes the redub on the Orange Bricks is definitely inferior in every way to the original dub.
What happened with Ocean reminds me of what happened with Maggie Roswell on the Simpsons, she always flew in to record her lines for Maude and when she asked for a raise Fox made noise because they were tired of having to pay for her to constantly fly in to record her lines, so they opted to kill Maude off instead. Roswell later did return to voice other characters though Maude stayed dead.
