Parents trashing on their kids favorite shows is cool, I mean it's pretty normal. It's probably healthier for the relationship that way, to create that kind of opposition for the kids so they can develop into their own people. Although maybe mix it together with enough positive appreciation for some of the other shows and things that the kids are into.

I got my mom who HATED the franchise and burned my brother's sticker album and thought Piccolo looked like a Demon (Which in hindsight was sensible of her to think. Still the only christian in the Japanese cast played him) To watch with me and love it as well!

Well originally Piccolo was supposed to be a demon... but if there is any character in the series who "looks like a demon", it would be Dabura.Cure Dragon 255 wrote: Sat Feb 06, 2021 9:25 pm I got my mom who HATED the franchise and burned my brother's sticker album and thought Piccolo looked like a Demon (Which in hindsight was sensible of her to think. He is a demon. He's the evil incarnate of God. Wow I cant believe Furukawa didnt protest that.
Re: What are your thoughts on parents trashing on the DB franchise?
I actually like Fairy Tail, but they should witness some of the fanservice in that series and realize that Dragon Ball has nothing on it when it comes to technically softcore content.

I assume it's less common now due to anime and geek culture in general being far more popular than they were back in the early 2000s.

Believe it or not but it's still pretty common for adults to be assholes about weird things. Unfortunately the influence of previous generations is not so easily wrung out of the proverbial towel.

Sometimes adults being skeptical of things their kid is into is justified, like with mobile games(or free to play games like Fortnite) that are loaded with microtransactions that can easily trick impressionable kids(or adults with gambling problems) into blowing hundreds(if not thousands) of dollars on virtual items or Youtubers and streamers that have vile viewpoints(Dr Disrespect, Crowder, The Quartering, Diversity in Comics, basically any of those alt-right grifters that post hour-long videos whining about The Last Jedi)that can easily influence kids(or adults with no life)into going down a rabbit hole of bigotry and harmful conspiracy theories.JulieYBM wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:47 am Believe it or not but it's still pretty common for adults to be assholes about weird things. Other times it really is just adults being weird over nothing(like all of that stupid whinging over that Cardi B song WAP last year).

My post was written under the impression that 'trashing on' was an indication of the attack being irrational. I'm not unaware that perhaps making sure your child doesn't fall down the fucking Alt-Right rabbit hole is a good idea.Planetnamek wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 2:18 pmSometimes adults being skeptical of things their kid is into is justified, like with mobile games(or free to play games like Fortnite) that are loaded with microtransactions that can easily trick impressionable kids(or adults with gambling problems) into blowing hundreds(if not thousands) of dollars on virtual items or Youtubers and streamers that have vile viewpoints(Dr Disrespect, Crowder, The Quartering, Diversity in Comics, basically any of those alt-right grifters that post hour-long videos whining about The Last Jedi)that can easily influence kids(or adults with no life)into going down a rabbit hole of bigotry and harmful conspiracy theories.JulieYBM wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:47 am Believe it or not but it's still pretty common for adults to be assholes about weird things. Imagine thinking anime, video games, etc. are bad for you. If I accidentally upset a friendly NPC in a video game I'm distraught for three days.

Re: What are your thoughts on parents trashing on the DB franchise?
My folks were always skeptical about stuff from another perspective. They didn't really care about what I watched in terms on content, My dad used to let me watch Robocop and Highlander and stuff with him, but they were always worried I'd get carried away with a fad. They always seemed to think if I got into something new that it was a passing thing that wouldn't last. I remember back in the mid 90's they'd never get me any Power Rangers stuff because they thought it was a fad, same in the late 90's for Dragon Ball Z.
My general thoughts? From an American perspective I think there's a big element of xenophobia to it. Think of some of the franchises that have been under that kind of scrutiny. Power Ranger, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh. There's always some fear that these foreign ideas are going to come in and corrupt our home grown American values. I can remember years ago, my younger brother getting a Yu-Gi-Oh game for his school friend's birthday, and his mother returning it to us because that's something he wasn't allowed to watch. Of course there's a whole other conversation about things like Dungeons and Dragons or Harry Potter that's not really applicable here. Long and short, people would rather just dismiss things than learn about them. It's human nature I suppose.

You would be surprised at just how many people are still extremely media negative and will refuse to watch pretty much anything that's not the news, romcoms, reality TV or maybe a super gritty "realistic" superhero movie.SupremeKai25 wrote: Fri Feb 05, 2021 11:38 am People still find anime/videogames weird and for nerds? Do you live in Leftist/queer spaces? Queer spaces are where you'll learn about all the vile creeps, either because they're going after marginalized people or because they're fun to dunk on.Polyphase Avatron wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 3:09 pmNever heard of any of those guys except Crowder...Planetnamek wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 2:18 pmSometimes adults being skeptical of things their kid is into is justified, like with mobile games(or free to play games like Fortnite) that are loaded with microtransactions that can easily trick impressionable kids(or adults with gambling problems) into blowing hundreds(if not thousands) of dollars on virtual items or Youtubers and streamers that have vile viewpoints(Dr Disrespect, Crowder, The Quartering, Diversity in Comics, basically any of those alt-right grifters that post hour-long videos whining about The Last Jedi)that can easily influence kids(or adults with no life)into going down a rabbit hole of bigotry and harmful conspiracy theories.JulieYBM wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:47 am Believe it or not but it's still pretty common for adults to be assholes about weird things. I don't know what those people are worried about, as you have to have values in order for them to be corrupted.MrSatan2099 wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 3:19 pmThere's always some fear that these foreign ideas are going to come in and corrupt our home grown American values.

I know this is a facetious comment made as a joke but these creeps legitimately think that they're being invaded by foreigners and that things are especially bad now--worse than ever before!--because they've drunk the Kool-Aid.Matches Malone wrote: Tue Feb 09, 2021 3:35 amI don't know what those people are worried about, as you have to have values in order for them to be corrupted.MrSatan2099 wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 3:19 pmThere's always some fear that these foreign ideas are going to come in and corrupt our home grown American values.
I mean, hell, they're not just afraid of Black and Brown people, they're afraid of all those trans women running around in their own backyards lavatories!

Re: What are your thoughts on parents trashing on the DB franchise?
Kind of, but not really. The US has so many problems that go way beyond what kids are watching from another country. Trying to blame an issue on DB or Japan is just people putting their heads in the sand to avoid finding real solutions to the problems. That's not to say the US is the worst country in the world, but anyone claiming it's the best clearly hasn't looked into how other countries around the world function.

Re: What are your thoughts on parents trashing on the DB franchise?
I personally never met any person with a parent who genuinely bad mouthed Dragon Ball or any other geeky thing that came from a place other than playful teasing.. A lot of my family still gives me shit for being such a big fan these days but its never out of anger fueled by ignorance.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

They give you grief for being a big fan...but not out of ignorance? Then what do they give you grief for being a Dragon Ball fan for if not ignorance?
