I doubt Toriyama wanted to make the manga longer; it had already stretched on to way beyond his original plans, because he was basically pushed by his publisher to make more. I also doubt he did it to get more money, seeing as how he was already one of the richest manga artists at that time. And besides, he doesn't strike me as the kind of person to do such a thing for just more money.
All right, all right, so he did start drawing manga simply because he needed the cash, but still... Not anymore, I think.
Question about the SSJ3 Goku and Fat Buu Battle
!
The manga biz doesn't work like the comic biz in America; the publisher basically owns you and all your work, and you do all of it rather than having a team of artists to assist you. So basically, Toriyama worked day in and day out on a weekly manga for ten years straight; he wanted to end it at the Freeza Saga - but Toei wanted more money, and so they extended his obligation. He could've put out some crap and it would've been fine, but he didn't, he put effort into it. But still people wanted more Goku, and the same extends to the Buu Saga. By that point he was pleading exhaustion and just quit.
Of course Toriyama wanted a longer series, sure, it's hard work, drawing, but people PAY, and if they're buying (which is hard to get too) you sell.
SSJ3 Goku vs Buu, hmn... *clicks fingers* Goku was only buying time for Trunks to get the dragon-radar, that goes hand in hand with wanting to boys to fight.... I reckon he was dissapointed with them though, I reckon in SSJ, Goenks could have given fat-buu a good bashing, and that's what Goku was relying on- of course, with no experience of fusion himself, it was a lousy thing to rely on-
-plus, characters can't make perfect descisions all the time, especially in action-orientated medias... imagine this...

Little miss perfect: Why, hello sir, would you like a mint?
Big scary monster: Uh.... I was going to kill you, but sure, I'd love a mint.
Little miss perfect: Let's sit and have a tea party.
Big scary monster: Wow, isn't that just lovely!
Little miss perfect: *shoots him in the head while he's distracted* why, that went perfectly!

...now, are we scared?
