It's called "Super Tension". All the playable characters in Dragon Quest 8 can pull it off, but for some reason the Hero is the only one with the Super Saiyan-like qualities. I think it was rather a cool nod to Dragon Ball, but hey Toriyama's designs always bear striking similarities & that's what makes them so definitive.
