One thing that I have noticed is, that GT takes heavy inspiration in designs not done by Toriyama, in his designs for other franchises like Dragon Quest. And probably even before, for example Dr. Litchee from The Plan... from the DBZ Gaiden resembles first form Mortamor from Dragon Quest VI or Omega Shenron when in second form.
And going by the Super manga and Toyotaro's presumed DBAF that came before, he has the same aproach when designing characters.
I won't be far from thinking, that Toyo's character designs appeal to the fans more than Toriyama's as his style is always evolving and he is far away from the fan favorite mid 90s style we saw in late DBZ, GT, That Dr. Slump remake/sequel that ran after GT and culminating on Kanzenban's covers. It reminds me of some artists that went from realism to postmodern and minimalism when I watch Toriyama progressing through the years.
But back on topic, thanks to others, including Toyotaro, Toriyama's contemporary design from the 90s lives on!
Granolah looks DQ/GTish, as well as others, most notably when I saw the god of destruction Mosco, it screamed GT.
I always find it quite funny and ironic, because Toriyama's Dragon Ball would look completely different and updated, if it was still drawn solely by the master himself and IMHO, I don't think that some of his new designs mesh well with the contemporary look of Dragon Ball since the Yo! Son Goku and Friends Special.
It's weird situation from artistic standpoint, sometimes it creates some inconsistencies (Trunks' blue hair created quite an uproar in the fanbase, even if it was just different color), but I have to say that I am huge fan of the contemporary 90s look that Toyotaro or Yamamuro kept and keep alive. My only wish is that they get more creative and brave with the main cast and their attire like GT or that brief time around Ressurection F and Universe 6 Tournament.
How popular is GT?

They did gave Goku and Vegeta new looks in Super but then quickly shied away from those. A shame because even just a slightly altered look like the Resurrection F outfits gave the series a new fresh scent. I also liked Gohan's radical new design for Resurrection F and was disappointed when they went back to his 'Z' design.MCDaveG wrote: Wed Aug 02, 2023 4:37 am One thing that I have noticed is, that GT takes heavy inspiration in designs not done by Toriyama, in his designs for other franchises like Dragon Quest. Even if I didn't like all of GT's stories, I did appreciate how they basically aged all the characters and gave them new outfits, haircuts etc. Perhaps due to overkill of seeing Goku's orange gi so many times I have completely fallen in love with Goku's blue and yellow outfit. Even after all these years, it still feels fresh and different. It also makes the characters feel more real in a way.
"Small" things like clothing and such clearly influence perception.

Re: How popular is GT?
Yeah! Exactly, pointed out those arcs. Even tho I had expectations about Goku and Vegeta forgoing their SSJ transformations as obsolete, I did love all those designs and characters. Also Goku having back the shash like that, but on the side and the shirt being two parts instead of full shirt stuffed inside his pants, basically the later Z one. It reminded me a lot of my most favorite outfit that Goku sported at the end of Z, or EOZ. I take GT Goku as basically having the same but revised outfit and I must say that I love the colors and that twist in the anniversary movie for Dragon Ball, with GT soundtrack and pretty much, Goku sporting the same Gi after switching to it when departing with Bulma.Jord wrote: Wed Aug 02, 2023 8:39 amThey did gave Goku and Vegeta new looks in Super but then quickly shied away from those. Kinda like trying to do a retcon, that Goku sports the same clothes at the end of the series as he did in his early childhood at the beginning.
In some parallel universe of course.
I love some of the clever alternate colors for the characters in FighterZ and with GT Goku the most... his alternates are, full red and basically his color pallete for the rest of DB and also, blue that really evokes his first anime appearance. The SSJ4 Dragon Fist takes it to the next level.
And also, Tenshinhan! His new attire looks like combo of his DB and Buu arc one. Krillin going back to his bald look to remind us of the Namek arc was too much in the face. But it counts. The Goku and Vegeta versus Freeza part was kinda forgetable, but all and all, I do enjoy the first half of the movie a lot! Especially the Z warriors gung ho on the Freeza army.
More brave things like that! While Super got better production wise, looked better, the designs switching back made it kinda stale and the dramaturgy dragging the main story bits after those interesting pre tournament episodes and ditching the side stories, like Trunks and Goten on an island, wanting it to end the story already and finish in a satisfying way, which it didn't and did that hasty cliffhanger that reminded me of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 opening... I love epilogues and feel like it needed at least one last episode if nothing.
And when I got to epilogues, I guess that while we can debate about the overall popularity, what I've noticed during the years and also around this forum, that GT Epilogue is universally regarded as great ending to the overall series!
In contrast to Super, as a kid and even now, that epilogue and ending makes me to want more stories as is it is satisfyingly open ended.
I was quite mad, when I finally took up the original manga (and later the kanzenban) where there was actually a satisfying epilogue and with Goku not being dead and they took it away from us...
because of GT!!! Which is kinda absurd
