I think the idea is that it would be an optional collectors item. Obviously Blu-ray/4K/DVD would still be there as the standard release.
Exactly, it's like the way in recent years bands such as Coldplay and ABBA have released albums on cassettes. The vinyl and CD variants obviously exist, but seemingly there is a niche for people that want to own older formats as collector's items. Although cassettes were terrible quality you could make the argument for music they are the most shelf-friendly option.

I'd say that would make the most sense if Crunchyroll ever went that route. Hell, re-release the original Captain Ginyu and Frieza sagas edited dubs as aired on Toonami as a test run to see if there's even a market for such a thing
The single DVDs for the inhouse dub contained Dale Kelly's narration up to Garlic Junior, but the VHS release went up to sometime in the Cell Games. Re-releasing the latter would probably be an interesting experiment although more fans would probably want that content on DVD as like a sequel to the Rock the Dragon boxset.

You have a lot of people that watch old movies and play old games on CRT. I'm in a retro collection group, and you be surprise how many people that do.

If they did, don't expect them to be cheap.
The recent Alien Romulus VHS is $60 and resellers are asking up to $200.
And add in the price of the VCR for fans who are interested but never experienced VHS unless they only collect it just to have it on a shelf and never play it which makes the whole thing pointless.

It would be funny if they actually re-released Z on VHS, and it somehow ended up being the best looking release.
It would be cool if they put out the 1996-2003 US broadcast dub on VHS (or even DVD). They could throw in some of the old promos/bumpers, and market it as the OG broadcast that made the show huge.
Also it's cool to see Suspiria getting the VHS treatment. It's a pretty great horror film.

I think FUNimation no longer has the edited broadcast masters of the original 1999-2003 in-house dub of DBZ.

Have you got a source for that?
The Rock the Dragon set came out 11 years ago, and was originally pitched to be a full release of the broadcast dub.
And Toonami were still re-running that version as late as 2007. And I'm pretty sure I remember reading some other territory (maybe Australia or South Africa?) were still airing it well after that point.

Correct, back in 2010 Australia were airing the Saban dub
weekends on Toasted TV at 6am but it was cancelled quick. Don't know if they aired the inhouse dub though.
Not sure about South Africa, its harder to find information on those broadcasts but it's possible, as I do recall seeing some schedules that at least list original Dragon Ball as late as 2008/2009.

God, I'm so happy that I'm not nostalgia-poisoned enough to pay money for a VHS in this day and age. All art deserves better than to be printed on that shit. When I want to listen to the clunk of a tape again or the loading noises of a VCR I just open up YouTube and search for a video of those noises.
I still have a fee VHS laying around, so I could dig that out to move around, too lol

I actually like buying anime on VHS and I can't imagine anyone wanting or needing a new release of DBZ. It'd take up so much damn shelf space, and most of it isn't exactly hard to find used anyway.

Would it be really interesting if you have recorded VHS tapes of the entire original DB anime trilogy broadcast run from 1986-1997 (with broadcast audio, full NEPs (including those that promotes a then-upcoming theatrical film or sweepstakes within Japan), sponsor cards, and full commercials included)?

There seemed to be a member of the site who had all that once...

I suppose so? That seems like an entirely unrelated matter?

Also for the 2012 Adult Swim's April Fools Prank pretty sure they played one of the Cell Games edited epsiodes Faulconer score and all. Then you have them giving Nicktoons the edited version of GT and most of the Z movies around that same time.
They definitely still have the broadcast masters they just have no use for them. They seemed to have lost interest in releasing anything edited after around 2004 (weren't the last 3 or so Z movies released uncut only on home video?) And we know Kai and Super never got edited home releases despite edited versions exisiting and airing on tv (UK only in Super's case but still)

Nick Toons also aired the edited versions of DBZ Movie 4-13, and the edited versions of DBZ Movie 4, 5, 6, 12 and 13 did air on the old days of Toonami. Toonami never aired DBZ Movie7-11 back in the 2000s. Funimation keeps their old edited versions in case if anyone wants to use them. Nick Toons never aired the in house dubs of DBZ Movie 1-3 because those were uncut, and edited versions of them probably don't exist.

Does the 2012 Adult Swim's April Fools Prank broadcasts of the edited Cell Games episodes of DBZ have the Dale Kelly narration of those episodes? IIRC the later Cell Games episodes with the Dale Kelly narration were never released on FUNimation's DBZ "Singles" DVDs, as the narration of those episodes was redubbed by Kyle Hebert for said release.

I don't know. I would guess if it was the edited version (and to my understanding it was) it was Dale Kelly. Pretty sure Hebert only redubbed Kelly for the DVD release.

I think I remember reading at the time that the April Fools broadcast used the 'Nightmare's End' DVD single. I think that particular single had some macroblocking issues, which the April Fools airing also supposedly had.
Still I agree there's no reason to assume they don't have the masters, especially as they still had the Saban dub as late as 2013.
Something else I just thought of are the random line changes on the Orange Bricks. Season 4 infamously had Goku say "Hey mister!" to Yajirobe, while the OG Funi dub had him correctly say "Yajoribe!". The 2013 Blu-rays and all subsequent releases actually reverted to the correct line, so they obviously still had the old masters at that point. (Too bad they never bothered restoring the lost voice filters)
