Ehhh..I didn't think the cropping would bother me as much as it seems to by the looks of these screenshots.
I can't understand why they would just chop off the top like that. :(
On hiatus.

Thanks for the comparison pictures, guys. After looking at these tonight, I'm not really in shock, I mean this topic has been going on for months.. In the end, I'm still going to buy it. If it was anymore then fifty I'd make a fuss over this. :)

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

I think the price is the only reason people will really buy it.

Also, here is the dragonbox image we are all talking about for comparisons when it shows up.

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

To cover up the very noticeable glue on their film masters, and they figured it was a better method than the zoom-in technique utilized for the previous releases. Evidently they didn't wanna go to the time and financial effort of digitally painting it away frame-by-frame for all 291 episodes like Toei and Pony Canyon did. So, this is what we get.

I gotta admit, the 16% loss is much more noticeable than I thought it'd be before seeing these pics. However, the already established pros outweigh the cons in my point of view; hence I'm still getting every released set regardless.

What do you mean? That part of the frame isn't even visible on the Dragon Boxes.
Mystery Person X wrote:It's interesting that for the opening at least, the old R1 version has more picture around each edge.
FUNi is using the creditless version which catches much more of the image. They zoom in on the openings when they put the credits on, and since every episode on the Dragon Box has a unique opening, they're not always going to be framed the exact same from episode to episode.

It gets....very bad, worse then I thought.

And the reason I'm not running to take more pngy perfect quality caps, I don't know how many times these will be viewed and i don't wanna kill my bandwidth, since its more to see the aspect ratio I decided not to worry about fixing vlc.

Thanks for all the caps godofchaos! The widescreen is...pretty god damn aweful. Atleast the colors are nice.

*waits for the 4-way shot, and everyone's reaction*

Also, godofchaos, I'm not forcing you or anything. I'm don't wanna be a pain in your ass, but if you have some spare time, I think some shots of the box/cases/discs/booklet would be cool. Take your time though, you don't have to hurry because of me!

LOL. Yeah, FUNi, not noticeable at all
Wait, Japanese credits? Did they include the unique Japanese credits for each episode after all? (Or were they doing this anyway in the UUE releases, and I just misunderstood?)

lol, he posted the pics while I was posting. I gotta say, I'm quite impressed with the set so far. It definately wasn't as cut down as expected, and IMO, the colors in the 4-way shot are much better in this set than the Dragon Box.

Thanks again godofchaos!

Why do the bottoms of the frames seem to be more cropped than the tops? Have they re-aligned the frames and just done it kinda badly, or what?

Anyways, the cropping isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, but the content that we're getting makes me laugh... "OMG ROSHI'S WALL!!!1"

Hm... if I wasn't getting this for $30, I'd be more obsessive compulsive about it, but the footage looks pretty good, and outside of paying more than I did for the box for a volume of the Dragon Box singles, I won't be able to get some of these episodes with a Japanese audio track (and.. *ahem* uncut), so, whatever. If I'm not completely disappointed, I'll probably do the same as Conan and get all the sets upon release (With preorder though, like I said, I wouldn't pay more than $30 for cropped DBZ).

How do the episodes look in motion? The six-disc thing has had me kinda worried.

Ugh... I guess I'll have to attempt to make my own box for the discs.

The colors look very sharp. They did a good job cleaning it up.

The cropping is horrible, though. How about some pictures of the case/discs?

Also, what's up with the feature? Do they go in-depth with the remastering process?

Eh, on some of those shots it bugs me but on others it doesen't. I'm starting to wonder if I should just watch it on my PC though since my TV does have severe overscan issues and would just make this even worse.

OH MY GOD.....

in the opening minute of the feature about the remastering, the guy in charge talks about how important it was to keep the INTEGRITY of the material

......I can't even express the words.......

and it looks like the remastering was done to the 'widescreen' master, not the full frame itself, which means we are FUCKED

It never bothered me this much until now.

I was excited about this set, but now I just don't know. The cropping is truely awful.

Dragon Ball Z in widescreen is Hell.

The dude also talks about how much 'better' it will be in widescreen and how much MORE you will see (and the footage shown is once again the movie footage), and talked about how much more CINEMATIC it is.

What's the overall quality of the picture/sound?
Better than the original Funimation take? Worse?

Hm...I'm kind of afraid to ask this, but I guess I might as well bite:

Would anyone be willing to upload an episode (or maybe just a reasonably long clip) of an episode in this format? Prefferably in english (since that's obviously something new, and the Japanese audio is unaltered). I've been going through these pictures, and I kinda feel like...I'm the ONLY one who's not really bothered by this whole thing. However, I don't wanna drop $50 that easily, so I'd like to have at least some sort of taste.
