Saiyans digesting food

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

This is the same episode where King Kai tells Goku about Planet Vegita's Kami destroying it, so maybe we can't take what he says here as entirely accurate. I always thought that Saiya-jin had a different type of digestion than humans, converting food directly into energy instead of chemically digesting it.

King Kai's actual words were, when asked if eating so much would slow Goku down, "No, it makes him faster. He doesn't even have to digest". So, it's possible he's merely referring to dead people, and not Saiya-jin.
Ahh, there it is. I got it mixed up with the scene in Big Trouble, Little Trunks for some reason. Thanks.

If they didn't digest, wouldn't they be pooping out drumsticks, t-bone stakes, bowlfulls of rice...

They'd just eat, and be like "liek, oh noes!, lol" and pack it all into their pants the next second. O_o;

Something i've been writing up on Saiyan digestion.. originally written by "XSSJ2GohanX" of Pojo's - who happens to be a biologist. i later added some of my own content to it. just my two cents... :wink:

Digestion and metabolism

Another area of interest with the saiya-jin is the biochemical reactions that run the vital systems in the body. Most of the biological functions and reactions such as glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and also the major systems such as protein synthesis and carbohydrate/glucose/fat breakdown are present in humans as well as saiya-jin. But the carbohydrate/glucose/fat breakdown is highly accelerated in saiya-jins. The immense amount of physical Calories that they exert on a daily basis through fighting and also the incredible stress that muscles have to stand up to the gravitational force of their homeworld, and absorb from the amount of ki they give off. To compensate for this, they require a much higher calorie intake than human beings. Also, the average saiya-jin possesses a far more intense aura than the average human being. When you combine this factor along with the higher pressure exerted by the gravity on their planet, saiya-jin are able to maintain incredible muscle mass to fat ratio. This plus the fact that their digestion is highly efficient, are key feature that allow them to intake large amounts of fat in a sitting and absorb all the calories of it. Their body is able to break down the fats much more rapidly than in human beings. This enables saiya-jins to get far more calories than humans because they can consume much higher amounts of meat. Like humans - males generally have higher metabolisms and thus caloric intake needs, than females.

There is a key difference in enzymatic activity between saiya-jin and humans and their gastric juices are quite highly acidic - needed to break down the extremely tough muscle tissue of the animals they prey on that share their home planet. Once food begins to leave the stomach as it enters the small intestine, they almost immediately begin to absorb virtually everything the body needs (extracted from whatever the saiya-jin has eaten), into the bloodstream to be distributed throughout the entire body. Saiya-jin are omnivores and are capable of, and do eat just about anything. The structure of their teeth is virtually identical to that of humans', as is their digestive system and processes. But compared to humans they are quite carnivorous. Also their system is better evolved for the consumption of meat than a human's. They possess no appendix and their stomach-capacity is comparatively large - capable of holding up to five gallons of food matter at once! In common with humans and most other animals (with the exception of ruminants - cattle, deer, sheep, ect. and termites) - saiya-jin have a simple stomach and cannot break down cellulose all that well - much of if not all of it, ends up excreted intact.

The macroscale physiology of saiya-jin is best observed in the durability of their bodies. The saiya-jin skeletal infrastructure receives an immensely higher amount of Ca2+ than human bones do. This means that a saiya-jin bone is far denser than its human counterpart. This is needed for the saiya-jins to live everyday in elevated gravitational forces. They are able to absorb greater impact on a bone before fractures are observed. The other element of the infrastructure that enables saiya-jins to absorb great levels of stress is their muscular makeup. The density of muscle fibrous cells that occupy a cubic um is far greater in saiya-jin than it is in humans.c The more a saiya-jin trains and the more intense their ki (PL) gets, the more and more dense the muscles get. To put this into perspective, if Bardock held out his arm in front of him, 100 tons of force launched on a sq. in. of his bicep would not move his arm. His muscle would have the texture of skin with the constitution of a metalloid. A final element of the macroscale physiology in saiya-jins is their skin. As saiya-jins train and increase their power level, the density of keratin and tissue binding cartASE (enzyme that links adjacent tissue together via membrane fusion) increases as a function of muscle mass. Muscle mass regulates the amount of ki the body can give off, and it also regulates the durability of skin tissue. To understand this, shooting a bullet at Bardock's chest would not penetrate the skin tissue because his tissue is bound together so densely.

A lesser-evolved mechanism of saiya-jin is their immune system. Like human beings, their immune system is vulnerable to antigens that it is not normally present with. Where saiya-jin do have evolved is their immunophsyioregenesis. This refers to the idea that when a saiya-jin suffers a breach in their normal body function such as a wound, there is a heightened biological response mechanism. Far more immunobodies aggregate to the antigen binding sites and facilitate the destruction of the antigen and regeneration of tissue. This allows saiya-jins to heal very quickly from physical traumas. There is also a physio-spiritual mechanism outside the realm of science that exists in saiya-jin that enables the amount of ki the body can use after a successful destruction of fatal antigens. While the true nature of this is unknown, it can be hypothesized that the being's spiritual energy recognizes when life force is extremely low due to severe physical trauma. The spirit also identifies when the life force is back to a normal level, and when this happens there is a somewhat regulated increase in productivity of the body in regards to ki.
Just Saiyan...
